Posada wouldn't fit in Philadelphia

December 26, 2011, 7:03 pm

The connection of Jorge Posada to the Phillies was difficult to understand when first reported, but that doesn?t necessarily make it false. There would be room for suspicion had Posada?s agent listed teams interested in his client, but information from the ESPN Deportes story was obtained from Posada?s father.

Though no matter where the info was gathered or how much interest Ruben Amaro has expressed in Posada?s services, this would be a questionable fit.

Posada, at 40, can no longer catch ? he was behind the plate for six innings last season. Posada would be relegated to a pinch-hitting role on a bench filled with older, slower, poor fielding players. The Phils already have an experienced hitter with no true position in Jim Thome. No team can afford to spend two bench spots on players too old and worn down to field, no matter their offensive prowess.

Posada, a switch-hitter, has hit .265 with an .841 OPS against righthanded pitching since 2009, but Thome and Laynce Nix were brought in, in part, to come off the bench to face righties.

The only way a Posada signing would make sense for the Phils is if they thought he could still catch, in which case he?d be a clear offensive upgrade from Brian Schneider. But as pointed out by Brotherly Glove, the Phils could have signed Posada or Jason Varitek months ago when they chose to bring Schneider back on a cheap, one-year deal. If the interest in Posada was derived from the thought that he could catch, the Phils certainly would have taken more time deciding on a backup catcher.

For more statistical musings from Corey Seidman, visit Brotherly Glove and Phillies Nation.

Avastin disappoints against ovarian cancer (AP)

Avastin, the blockbuster drug that just lost approval for treating breast cancer, now looks disappointing against ovarian cancer, too. Two studies found it did not improve survival for most of these patients and kept their disease from worsening for only a few months, with more side effects.

The Genentech drug won approval in Europe last week for advanced ovarian cancer. But its maker has no immediate plans to seek the same approval in the United States. After talking with the Food and Drug Administration, "we do not believe the data will support approval" although no final decision has been made, said Charlotte Arnold, a spokeswoman for Genentech, part of the Swiss company Roche.

Results of the studies are in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

In November, the FDA revoked Avastin's approval for breast cancer because it did not meaningfully extend life and can have serious side effects. Without approval, doctors can prescribe the drug but insurers may not pay. Treatment with it can cost $100,000 a year.

Avastin can still be sold for some colon, lung, kidney and brain cancers. The new research was aimed at adding ovarian cancer to the list.

One study, led by Dr. Robert Burger of Fox Chase Cancer Center in Philadelphia, involved nearly 1,900 women with advanced ovarian cancer given one of three treatment combinations. The time until the disease got worse was a median of 10 months in those given just chemotherapy; adding Avastin improved that by just one to four months for the other two groups.

Survival was similar among the groups, and side effects were higher among those on Avastin ? mostly high blood pressure but also some stomach and gut problems that needed treatment.

In the other study, led by researchers from England, more than 1,500 ovarian cancer patients were given chemo with or without Avastin. The drug kept cancer at bay just one to two months longer than chemo alone did, with more cases of high blood pressure. There was a trend toward improved survival for those on Avastin, but the difference was too small to say the drug was responsible.

Genentech helped pay for the studies and some of the researchers consult for the company.

Dr. Gary Lyman, a Duke University researcher who was on the FDA advisory panel that recommended revoking Avastin's approval for breast cancer, wrote in an email that he agreed with the company's decision not to seek approval for ovarian cancer.

"The situation is very similar" to the results in breast cancer, and approval is unlikely unless a biological marker or test can show which patients might benefit, he wrote.

About 220,000 new cases of ovarian cancer are diagnosed each year around the world, and it causes 140,000 deaths. In the United States, the National Cancer Institute estimates 22,000 new cases and 15,000 deaths each year.

Endeavour buys stake in 3 North Sea oil fields

(AP)? HOUSTON ? Endeavour International Corp. said Tuesday it paid $330 million for ConocoPhillips' interest in three oil fields in the U.K. North Sea.

Endeavour shares jumped $1.51, or 23.6 percent, to $7.91 in afternoon trading. ConocoPhillips gained 54 cents to $72.97.

Houston-based Endeavour said the combination of the purchase and existing projects will make it one of the biggest independent producers in the U.K. North Sea.

The wells are producing the equivalent of about 10,000 barrels of oil per day, and probable reserves are more than 33 million barrels, Endeavour said.

The company said the acquisition by its Endeavour Energy UK Ltd. subsidiary increases its holdings in the Alba, MacCulloch and Nicol fields. Production is almost entirely oil, which will increase the company's cash flow, it said.

The price includes $94 million in tax attributes, the company said.

The purchase is expected to close in the first half of next year and be effective retroactively to Jan. 1, 2011.

Couple says Southwest put disabled son at risk

A New Hampshire couple said Saturday that Southwest Airlines flight attendants put the couple's terminally ill son at risk by ordering him out of a safety seat and into a regular passenger seat for a flight home from Florida.

Chris Dainiak and his wife, of Bedford, were told to remove 8-year-old Nicholas from his protective travel seat for a Friday flight home from Orlando to Manchester, N.H., Chris Dainiak said. Nicholas suffers from a rare illness called Batten disease and can't walk, talk, feed himself or hold his head up.

The attendants agreed Nicholas would be safer in his special seat but didn't know if it was approved by the Federal Aviation Administration, Dainiak told The Associated Press. He said the boy has used the seat on previous flights, including the Southwest flight that took the family to Orlando so they could visit Disney World.

He said he wants Southwest to develop a policy to ensure other people with disabled children aren't put in similar situations.

"They just wanted to cover their butts to make sure that they weren't going to be fined by the FAA and, therefore, they decided the best thing for Southwest was to put my son at risk," Dainiak said.

Southwest is looking into the particulars of what happened and contacted the family Saturday to learn more, said spokesman Brad Hawkins. He said the FAA has regulations regarding the size of medical seats, but he didn't know if the Dainiaks' seat was in compliance.

Spire installer brings Siri to any jailbroken iOS 5 device, legally -- proxy still required

A few months of work by iOS hackers Grant Paul (aka chpwn), Steven Troughton-Smith and Ryan Petrich has culminated in the release of Spire, a new installer that will easily set up Siri on your jailbroken iOS 5 device. While Apple has kept its little helper exclusively constrained to the iPhone 4S, it now runs on iPads, iPhone 4, iPod touches and the iPhone 3GS, and while that's been done before they claim the other new trick is that it's legal, avoiding the copyright infringement inherent in previous hacks. When installed it will initiate a 100MB download of Siri directly from Apple so watch your bandwidth limits, and also be prepared to set up your own proxy server with donated info from an iPhone 4S to hold the line between Apple's backend and yourself. It's available on Cydia now so if you've been waiting for a way to get this feature for yourself it's not far away, however Troughton-Smith tells 9to5 Mac that the next major step may not come until the iPhone 4S is jailbroken and they can avoid the proxy server issues altogether.

AL woman to discontinue tornado Facebook site

By JEFF MARTIN
Associated Press

ATLANTA (AP) - In the weeks and months after tornadoes tore through homes across the South, pictures and documents rained on yards hundreds of miles away.

An Alabama woman began collecting them in an online database, posting the cherished scraps of people's lives on Facebook so they could be identified and claimed by grateful families.

Now, eight months after the April tornadoes struck in Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi and Tennessee, Patty Bullion says she plans to discontinue the online database of pictures and documents.

She says she will leave Facebook page up for a couple more weeks, then take it down and focus on other things in her life. She said the items pictured are highly personal, and she doesn't think they should be online indefinitely.

Apple Files Patents for Fuel Cell Computers (NewsFactor)

A laptop powered by a hydrogen fuel cell, going for weeks without refueling. That vision of the future is described in a pair of patent applications filed by Apple and made public Thursday.

One of the patent applications, entitled Fuel Cell System to Power a Portable Computing Device, describes a fuel cell system with a fuel cell stack that generates electricity, as well as a system controller and a bidirectional communication link between the controller and the device.

'Days or Even Weeks'

The other application, Fuel Cell System Coupled to a Portable Computing Device, describes a fuel cell system that "is capable of both providing power to and receiving power from a rechargeable battery in a portable computing device." The application notes that this would eliminate "the need for a bulky and heavy battery within the fuel cell system," thus significantly reducing the size, weight, and cost of the fuel cell.

Fuel cells, such as hydrogen fuel cells, can pack a lot of electricity-generating power into a small package. As one of the applications noted, "Fuel cells and associated fuels can potentially achieve high volumetric and gravimetric energy densities," which could potentially mean that portable devices could operate for "days or even weeks without refueling." Similarly, the other application's description of linking the fuel cell to the rechargeable battery helps to keep size and weight down, and time between refueling up.

Apple's applications discuss using sodium borohydride powder mixed with water as a fuel, and the hydrogen would be obtained from the sodium borohydride. The hydrogen then mixes with oxygen via a membrane, producing electricity and water vapor.

'Future Proofing'

The integration of the fuel cell system into the device would assumedly be one of the key features for which patent protection is sought. Another patent application by Apple, published in October, described a design for fuel cell plates.

Laura DiDio, an analyst with Information Technology Intelligence Corp., said Apple's patents indicated it was "future proofing and hedging its bets," and that the real question was whether the innovative company "has something cooking like this in the back room?"

She added that it was possible that Apple is not moving forward on this front, but simply looking to protect itself against other companies' ventures into fuel-cell powered mobile computing devices. Even if the Cupertino, Calif.-based company is using some of its large supply of cash to conduct R&D in this area, DiDio said, it was unlikely that mainstream products would emerge in the next decade or so.

As with many large technology companies, patents figure prominently in Apple's strategy. The biggest example of the importance of patents is the ongoing legal war by Apple with Samsung, HTC, and Motorola Mobility, over aspects of those companies' Android-based devices that Apple says violate its patents. Apple recently won a minor victory in its U.S. patent fight with HTC, lost a next step in its war with Samsung in Australia, and both won and lost some battles with Samsung in Europe.
