Durant, Westbrook can't rescue Thunder in Game 2

SAN ANTONIO (AP) ? The Oklahoma City Thunder finally found a way to slow down the San Antonio Spurs. It still wasn't enough to beat them.

Tony Parker had 34 points and eight assists, Manu Ginobili added 20 points and the Spurs stayed perfect in the playoffs with a 120-111 victory in Game 2 of the Western Conference finals Tuesday night.

Kevin Durant scored 31 points, Russell Westbrook had 27 points and eight assists and James Harden rebounded from a rough Game 1 to score 30 points for the Thunder, who have lost two straight for the first time since early April. Oklahoma City dropped to 15-4 in games after losses this season.

"There are no moral victories for us," Durant said. "We were down. We dug ourselves a hole. We did what we normally do, which is fight all game, and we lost."

The Thunder trailed by as many as 22 points in the third quarter and by 16 when coach Scott Brooks resorted to intentionally fouling Spurs center Tiago Splitter, a 32 percent free-throw shooter in the playoffs entering the game.

Splitter went 5 for 10 from the line over a 54-second span before Spurs coach Gregg Popovich replaced him with Tim Duncan, and Oklahoma City trailed by the same margin ? 16 ? that it did when Brooks called for the "Hack-a-Splitter" strategy.

The Spurs seemed to lose their offensive flow after that, and the Thunder rallied in the fourth quarter.

"There's a reason why you do it, to kill the rhythm," Parker said. "I think it got us out of our rhythm."

Oklahoma City got within six points with just over 5 minutes to play. But Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan helped San Antonio finish off the Thunder.

Game 3 is Thursday night in Oklahoma City.

"We're upset about that loss," Durant said. "We've got to go home and regroup and watch film, see how we can get better."

The Thunder are 5-0 on their raucous home court in the playoffs. But only 14 teams in NBA playoff history have overcome 2-0 deficits to win a series, and the Spurs show no signs of letting the Thunder back in it.

"First, we've got to worry about Game 3," Westbrook said. "Regardless of what's going on with this last game or the next game, we've got to worry about Game 3 and come in with the same mindset and try to get a win."

The Spurs set an NBA record with their 20th consecutive victory bridging the regular season and the playoffs. They came in sharing the longest such streak with the 2000-01 Lakers, who won 19 straight before losing to Philadelphia in the first game of the finals.

Those Lakers went on to win the championship and Parker's performance is yet another reason to think the Spurs will do the same.

Guided by their All-Star point guard, San Antonio shredded Oklahoma City's defense with pinpoint passes for three quarters. The Spurs were shooting 63 percent from the field and 64 percent from 3-point range at one point in the third quarter.

Parker went 16 for 21 from the field, including a 3-pointer.

"Tony's been great all year," Popovich said. "He's been really focused the entire season."

San Antonio picked up where it left off from the 39-point fourth quarter that turned Game 1 on Sunday. With sharp passes and hot shooting, the Spurs jumped to a 19-9 lead after the Thunder missed six of their first seven shots and had three turnovers in the first 4 minutes.

The Spurs shot 58 percent (22 of 38) and had 13 assists in the first half. They also cut down their turnovers, committing only six in the first half after giving away 14 in the first two quarters of Game 1.

San Antonio resumed picking apart Oklahoma City's defense with precision passes after the break, scoring on five straight possessions. The biggest cheer from the crowd came after Ginobili flipped a behind-the-back pass to Parker in the corner for another 3 and the lead ballooned to 78-58.

"We have seen what we can do when we play as a team," Harden said. "We fought hard, but it was too much of a deficit to come back (from) late in the game."

The Spurs missed 12 of 15 shots during one stretch, but Parker hit an off-balance, high-arcing jumper with 3:39 left for a 107-96 lead and San Antonio controlled the game from there.

"Our guys played hard," Brooks said. "Unfortunately, we came away with nothing the last few days."

Google, Samsung unveil new version of Chromebook

(AP Photo/Google)

(AP) ? Google will try to win more converts to a computer operating system revolving around its popular Chrome Web browser with a new wave of lightweight laptops built by Samsung Electronics.

Tuesday's release of the next-generation Chromebooks will give Google and Samsung another opportunity to persuade consumers and businesses to buy an unconventional computer instead of machines running on familiar software by industry pioneers Microsoft Corp. and Apple Inc.

Unlike most computers, Google's Chromebooks don't have a hard drive. They function like terminals dependent on an Internet connection. The laptops come with 16 gigabytes of flash memory ? the kind found in smartphones, tablet computers and some iPods. Two USB ports allow external hard drives and other devices to be plugged into the machines.

Chromebooks haven't made much of a dent in the market since their debut a year ago. In that time, more people have been embracing Apple's iPad and other tablet computers ? a factor that has contributed to a slowdown in sales of personal computers.

The cool reception to Chromebooks has raised questions about whether Google misjudged the demand for computers designed to quickly connect to its dominant Internet search engine and ever-expanding stable of other online services, ranging from email to a recently introduced file-storage system called Drive.

"The Chromebooks have had less to offer than tablets, so they haven't been that interesting to consumers," said Gartner analyst Mika Kitagawa.

Google says it always intended to take things slowly with the Chromebooks to give its engineers time to understand the shortcomings of the machines and make the necessary improvements.

"This release is a big step in the journey to bringing (Chromebooks) to the mainstream," said Sundar Pichai, Google's senior vice president of Chrome and apps.

The upgraded laptop, called "Series 5 550," is supposed to run two-and-half times faster than the original machines, and boasts higher-definition video. Google also added features that will enable users to edit documents offline, read more content created in widely used Microsoft applications such as Word and Excel, and retrieve material from another computer at home or an office. More emphasis is being placed on Chrome's Web store, which features more than 50,000 applications.

The price: $449 for models that only connect to the Internet through Wi-Fi and $549 for a machine that connects on a 3G network. Samsung's original Chromebooks started out with prices ranging from $429 to $499. Like the original Chromebooks, the next-generation machines feature a 12.1-inch screen display and run on an Intel processor.

Google Inc. and Samsung also are introducing a "Chromebox" that can be plugged into a display monitor to create the equivalent of desktop computer. The box will sell for $329.

The latest Chromebook and new Chromebox will be available online only, beginning in the U.S. on Tuesday, followed by a Wednesday release in the United Kingdom. The products will go on sale in brick-and-mortar stores for the first time in still-to-be-determined Best Buy locations next month.

The expansion beyond Internet-only sales signals Google's determination to attract a mass audience to its Chromebooks, just as it's done with smartphones running on its Android software. More than 300 million mobile devices have been activated on Android since the software's 2008 release.

Without providing specifics, Pichai said several other computer manufacturers will release Chromebooks later this year. Google plans to back the expanded line of Chromebooks with a marketing blitz during the holiday shopping season in November and December.

One reason Google is confident Chromebooks will eventually catch on is because the Chrome Web browser has attracted so many fans in less than four years on the market. The company says more than 200 million people worldwide currently are using the Chrome browser.

Like other laptop and desktop computers, the Chromebooks will have to contend with the accelerating shift to the iPad and other tablets. The iPad 2, an older version of Apple's tablet line, sells for as little as $399, undercutting the new Chromebook. Other low-cost tablets are expected to hit the market later this year. One of them might even be made by Motorola Mobility, a device maker that Google bought for $12.5 billion earlier this month. Google so far hasn't commented on Motorola's future plans for the tablet market.

The new Chromebooks also are hitting the market at a time when some prospective computer buyers may be delaying purchases until they can check out machines running on Windows 8, a makeover of Microsoft's operating system that is expected to be released in September or October. Microsoft designed Windows 8 so it can be controlled through touch as well as keyboards. That versatility is expected to inspire the creation of hybrid machines that are part laptop, part tablet.

Google shares added $2.81 Tuesday to close at $594.34.

Canada's Ryder Hesjedal in striking distance at Giro d'Italia

PASSO DELLO STELVIO - Joaquin Rodriguez increased his lead over Ryder Hesjedal at the Giro d'Italia, but he still thinks the Canadian is the favourite to win the race.

Thomas De Gendt won the grueling penultimate stage of the Giro d'Italia on Saturday while Rodriguez increased his overall lead over Victoria's Hesjedal from 17 to 31 seconds.

However, the last stage in Milan is a 30-kilometre individual time trial. Hesjedal is known to be extremely strong in those type of races.

"I'm happy with today's performance," Rodriguez said. "I managed to gain some precious seconds over Hesjedal but I think he's still the favourite, because 31 seconds is not such a great gap and he's better than me in races against the clock. I need a miracle! Still, anything can happen, especially after two such difficult stages, where both Hesjedal and I spent a lot of energy. That's the reason why I believe I still have a chance.

"For sure I'll do my best in order to make this dream come true, also because I think I have no other rivals: The others are quite far behind. De Gendt put on a great performance today and he's an ITT specialist, but he's 2:18 behind, which should be enough."

With a superb climb on the Passo dello Stelvio, De Gendt finished the so-called queen stage of the Giro in six hours 54 minutes, 41 seconds. He finished 56 seconds ahead of Damiano Cunego, with third-placed Mikel Nieve 2:50 behind.

De Gendt, who started the day five minutes, 40 seconds behind Rodriguez in the overall standings, closed the gap to 2:18 and was in fourth place. The Belgian was briefly just 10 seconds off the pink jersey but Rodriguez managed to make up 1:30 in the final kilometre.

"I thought that if the favourites didn't start chasing soon, the pink jersey was a possibility as well as the stage," De Gendt said. "But I knew the other favourites would go full gas in the last four kilometres and eat into the margin I had built up. I don't think I can win the Giro now, with this gap. But maybe I can get to the podium, if I recover well enough from today's effort.

"I didn't expect to win, I went away on the Mortirolo because I just thought it was better to get some time on the favourites before the Stelvio. Then Nieve started going really fast and was giving everything so we extended our gap to over three minutes. On the Stelvio, I felt really good, also thanks to the training I've done on climbs, and I went for it. The last few kilometres were very hard, I was dying!"

Saturday's stage was the toughest of this year's edition, with the 219-kilometre trek from Caldes culminating in a 23-kilometre ascent on the snow-covered Stelvio, which has a maximum gradient of 12 per cent and, at nearly 3,000 metres above sea level, is the highest finish of any Grand Tour stage.

It also has 48 hairpin bends, 27 more than the infamous Alpe d'Huez on the Tour de France.

The route also included the legendary Mortirolo climb, described by the seven-time Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong as the hardest climb he's ever ridden, with an average gradient of 10.5 per cent.

Last August, organizers created a tennis-like draw of potential climbs on the Giro Facebook page and gave fans a chance to vote for their favourite. The Mortirolo and the Stelvio reached the final and race officials decided to use both.

Oliver Zaugg broke clear of a pack of 14 escapees with 60 kilometres to go and built a lead of 30 seconds over a chasing group of Christian Vande Velde, Damiano Caruso, Andrey Amador, Alberto Losada and Jose Serpa at the top of the Mortirolo. He swiftly extended that to nearly two minutes.

However, De Gendt made his move a short time later, and caught Zaugg with 30 kilometres to go, along with Nieve, Cunego, Amador, Jon Izaguirre and Tanel Kangert.

The gap to the pink jersey group was four minutes at the start of the Stelvio as De Gendt and Nieve attacked with Cunego bravely chasing.

De Gendt broke clear with 12 kilometres to go and an astonishing climb saw him claim the biggest and most memorable victory of his career.

Defending champion Michele Scarponi attacked with 1,500 metres to go but, after initially letting the Italian go, Rodriguez followed and managed to finish in fourth to gain some valuable seconds ahead of his rivals. Scarponi was fifth and Hesjedal sixth.

Rodriguez's fourth-place also secures him the red jersey as the Spaniard moved a point ahead of Mark Cavendish in the points classification. Italy's Matteo Rabottini secured the blue jersey as he took maximum points over the opening classified climbs to win the mountains classification in his debut Giro.

Andrea Guardini, who memorably beat world champion Cavendish in a sprint finish to win stage 18, was disqualified for riding in the slipstream of his team car. Robert Hunter, Ivan Velasco and another unconfirmed rider were also disqualified.

Jack Bobridge and Timon Seubert dropped out of the race.

Has there been a legal release of the California Girls sessions (excluding the official backing track and vocals)? I have the UM Vol. 9 Disc 2 material in low quality mp3s and was hoping to get my hands on something of higher quality and was wondering if there was a legal way to do so.
