Bionic Eye Lets Blind Woman Experience Vision

An anonymous reader writes "Australian researchers implanted a bionic eye with 24 electrodes in Ms Dianne Ashworth, a 54-year-old who had limited vision due to a inherited condition called retinitis pigmentosa. The implant has allowed her to see flashes of light and shapes when researchers deliver electrical pulses to the device. From the article: 'This early prototype consists of a retinal implant with 24 electrodes. A small lead wire extends from the back of the eye to a connector behind the ear. An external system is connected to this unit in the laboratory, allowing researchers to stimulate the implant in a controlled manner in order to study the flashes of light. Feedback from Ms Ashworth will allow researchers to develop a vision processor so that images can be built using flashes of light. This early prototype does not incorporate an external camera ? yet. This is planned for the next stage of development and testing.'"

Intervention helps children with sickle cell disease complete MRI tests without sedation

ScienceDaily (Aug. 31, 2012) ? St. Jude Children's Research Hospital reports success using a targeted educational approach to teach young patients to remain motionless during MRI scans, making the process safer.

Sitting still is tough for children, which makes MRI scans a challenge. The scans require that patients remain motionless for extended periods. Findings from St. Jude Children's Research Hospital showed that a brief, targeted intervention dramatically increases the likelihood that children as young as 5 years old will be able to undergo testing without sedation.

That is good news for children with sickle cell disease, who were the focus of this study. Patients with sickle cell disease often undergo brain and liver MRIs to check for complications related to their disease or treatment. But the blood disorder puts patients at increased risk for serious anesthesia-related complications, so sedation is avoided when possible.

This study of 71 patients with sickle cell disease ages 5 through 12 found that children who completed the short preparation program prior to their MRI were eight times more likely to complete the scans without being sedated than patients of the same age who did not receive the preparation. The work was published online in the journal Pediatric Radiology.

The intervention implemented by the Child Life Program at St. Jude involves educating patients and families about exactly what to expect during an MRI, assigning patients jobs to focus on during the scans and also working to identify strategies to help them remain motionless during the test. "Some patients chose to listen to music or to squeeze a ball to help them remember not to move," said Katherine Cejda, a St. Jude Child Life specialist and the study's first author. "Some patients had the option of watching movies or having parents or other adults in the room with them during the test."

This study is the first designed to determine the effectiveness of this approach and the first to focus on children with sickle cell disease. Cejda said similar programs are used by child life specialists throughout the U.S. to help prepare children for MRIs and other medical procedures.

September is National Sickle Cell Awareness Month. This study highlights the varied efforts underway at St. Jude to improve the health and quality of life for children and adolescents with sickle cell disease.

The paper's senior author, Jane Hankins, M.D., an associate member of the St. Jude Department of Hematology, said that avoiding sedation reduces the risk to the patients, particularly those with sickle cell disease.

Sickle cell disease is caused by a mutation in the gene for assembling hemoglobin. Hemoglobin is the protein red blood cells use to carry oxygen throughout the body. While red blood cells are normally pliable discs, the inherited mistake results in red blood cells becoming brittle and assuming a banana shape that can trigger intense pain and lead to organ damage. Hankins said the disease also makes anesthesia riskier.

General anesthesia can lead to a drop in temperature, blood oxygen levels and dehydration. In patients with sickle cell disease, dehydration can result in a painful and dangerous buildup of sickled cells. Patients can wind up hospitalized, sometimes in the intensive care unit, for treatment of severe pain or acute chest syndrome, a pneumonia-like illness, Hankins said. To reduce that risk, a sickle cell patient scheduled for anesthesia is hospitalized overnight to receive extra fluids and possibly a blood transfusion.

The combination of factors creates inconvenience and added risk for the patient. It also adds to health care costs. While no family ever pays St. Jude for the care their child receives, controlling costs remains important to the hospital. The program could also be adopted by other health care institutions worldwide to help manage cost.

The intervention is now routinely offered to all St. Jude patients undergoing MRIs. Cejda said the program has been used to help children as young as age 4 complete scans without sedation. "This preparation program offers a real advantage to patients," Hankins added.

The study included children scheduled for brain or liver MRIs, which usually last 30 to 60 minutes. Researchers reported that 30 of the 33 children, or 91 percent, in the intervention group underwent successful MRI scans without sedation. That compares to 71 percent, or 27 of 33 patients, who did not participate in the program prior to undergoing MRIs without sedation.

The other authors are Matthew Smeltzer, Beth McCarville and Kathleen Helton, all of St. Jude, and Eileen Hansbury, formerly of St. Jude.

The research was funded in part by ALSAC, the fundraising organization that supports St. Jude.

Rutgers-Tulane game on at Superdome as scheduled

The Rutgers-Tulane football game will be played Saturday night in the Superdome, only days after Isaac swept across the New Orleans area with hurricane-force winds.

"We have concluded it is not only appropriate to move ahead with this event but essential to show the nation the resolve and resiliency of our community when faced with enormous adversity," Tulane athletic director Rick Dickson said Thursday.

The Superdome sustained only superficial damage to surrounding signs, banners and landscaping.

Doug Thornton, an executive with SMG, the company that manages the state-owned Superdome, said the stadium never lost power and its roof never leaked. He noted key Superdome personnel were returning to work Thursday to get the stadium ready to host college football.

Although the dome was in good shape Wednesday night, Tulane officials waited on a final decision to play until evaluating the condition of the community and confirming the airport would be ready for Rutgers' charter flight on Friday.

Louis Armstrong International Airport lost power during the storm, which came ashore Tuesday night and lingered in south Louisiana as both a hurricane, then later as a tropical storm, throughout Wednesday. The airport also was closed to commercial air traffic on Thursday.

On Thursday morning, Dickson consulted with officials from the city, the Superdome, Rutgers and the CBS Sports Network, which will televise the game nationally.

The Tulane football team left New Orleans for Birmingham, Ala., on Monday and practiced at Samford. The team planned to practice there again Thursday before returning to New Orleans.

The game will mark the end of an eventful first week of the regular season for new Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson, who is used to such weather-related disruptions. Johnson grew up in the New Orleans area and spent the past six seasons as wide receivers coach for the New Orleans Saints.

He joined the Saints the season after Hurricane Katrina hit. He was with the team when they left their suburban New Orleans headquarters and practiced in Indianapolis during Week 1 of the 2008 season while Hurricane Gustav came ashore in south Louisiana.

Isaac has impacted other Louisiana teams.

It caused the postponement of Thursday night's game in Shreveport between Texas A&M and Louisiana Tech. That game was called off on Tuesday, hours before the storm made landfall, and was rescheduled for Oct. 13, when both teams had an open date.

Also, Nicholls State ? located in Thibodaux, about 60 miles southwest of New Orleans ? has postponed its season opening trip to Oregon State this weekend. The team was scheduled to fly out of New Orleans on Friday for the contest in Corvallis. Officials are working on rescheduling the game.

LSU officials were still trying to decide on Thursday whether the third-ranked Tigers could host their season opener Saturday night against North Texas.

LSU's campus had power and classes were set to resume on Friday, but tree and power line damage left many without power in areas surrounding Baton Rouge, and university officials were consulting with area authorities to determine whether the community could handle a game drawing in excess of 90,000 fans to campus.

5 Things to Do If Your Spouse Won't Come to Church | Black and ...

Credit: Cross by geludead

By Desiree S. Coleman

In all marriages, unity is the ultimate goal. ?And being on one accord is fundamental for strong relationships.? For people who are deeply committed to their faith, having spiritual connectedness is also an important part of marital unity.? So, what happens when one party does not share the same commitment level as their spouse when it comes to faith?? Here are five tips for those wondering what to do when their spouse?doesn?t?share in their faith:

1)????Be An Example?:

Actions speak louder than words.? So, getting indignant and acting unbecomingly, definitely won?t draw your spouse closer to your faith doctrine. ?In fact, it could push them away.? Instead, allow the fruit of your faith in God to shine through.

1 Peter 3 describes how a wife?s character and peaceful disposition can encourage her husband to believe.? And this principle is universal because seeing how your faith has positively impacted your life can speak volumes to your spouse.

2)????Don?t Pressure or Badger Them

When discussing the topic of faith, remember that it?s a personal journey, and you cannot make someone believe what you believe.? You can be an example, show love and pray for them, but you can?t force them to accept your beliefs.? Don?t badger, pressure, or try to guilt your spouse into believing.? That could create resentment and also undermine the genuine faith that you hope they develop on their own.

3)????Pray for Them

This seems obvious, but prayer is one of the best gifts.? Prayer not only creates a space of peaceful meditation, but also offers solace as you cast your cares on God.? It calms your mind about your concerns and your faith is strengthened as you make petitions for your spouse.

4)????Occasionally Invite Them

You should invite your spouse to come along with you to your place of worship, but it should not be a constant nagging.? Be sensitive to the timing and frequency with which you request their presence.? And if they decline your invitation, respectfully accept it.? This will diffuse conflict.

5)????Let Go and Let God

In being true to yourself, explain to your spouse why your faith is important to you.? Likewise, express your desire for a united family.? And communicate how you would love to have a shared commitment to faith.? And then, as clich? as it sounds, you will have to let go and let God do the work.? Realize that the spiritual walk involves spiritual things.? In other words, at a certain point, there is only so much that you can do and say.? At that point, you will have to activate your faith and believe God to draw your spouse unto Him.? And don?t lose hope when it seems like nothing is happening. ?Because when you?ve exhausted all your options and handed it to God, that?s when you realize He has been at work all along.

BMWK ? How have you handled this situation in your marriage? Do you and your spouse attend different churches? Have you been able to make that work in your marriage?

Curiosity beams new will.i.am song from Mars

PASADENA, Calif. (AP) ? Will.i.am has premiered his new single ? from Mars.

The NASA rover Curiosity beamed to Earth his new song, "Reach for the Stars," on Tuesday in the first music broadcast from another planet, to the delight of students who gathered at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory to listen.

The song had been uploaded to the rover, which landed near the equator of Mars, and played back ? a journey of some 700 million miles.

The musician, who promotes science and mathematics education, was among more than a dozen celebrities who were invited to JPL to watch Curiosity's landing earlier this month. Others included Wil Wheaton, Seth Green and Morgan Freeman.

In 2008, NASA beamed the Beatles' "Across the Universe" into the cosmos to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the song.

Choosing LASIK Requires Careful Advance Research

Old Bridge, NJ, August 28, 2012 ?(PR.com)? ?I?m concerned about the number of people I?ve met who want to have LASIK surgery the day they first see me,? Dr. Ilan Cohen said. ?Some of my colleagues in the vision correction field are reporting similar experiences, and I want to make sure people realize that they should not make an impulse decision to get LASIK or similar procedures.?

Dr. Cohen, director of 5th Avenue Eye Center, assists people who are seeking New Jersey LASIK surgery and those throughout the Tri-State area with his ground-breaking LASIK surgical procedures. However, he wants to promote the importance of people doing plenty of research and advance preparation before undergoing LASIK.

?LASIK is safe most of the time, but it is not like coloring your hair,? Dr. Cohen said. ?We live in an instant-gratification society where we want to see change right now. But getting LASIK eye surgery in NJ is not a decision to make on an impulse. It is indeed surgery, and, whenever you have surgery, there are a few risks.?

Ideally, a person interested in LASIK surgery should first attend a group information seminar followed by an initial consultation with a qualified corneal and refractive specialist. Then the patient should meet with his desired surgeon on another date to ask any final questions before undergoing LASIK.

?I encourage people to research worst-case scenarios through reputable websites, such as those of our federal government,? Dr. Cohen said. ?The Federal Trade Commission is sort of a watchdog for modern consumers and they have plenty of information that outlines the potential benefits as well as risks of LASIK. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is another great resource.?

Doing the proper research to find the best LASIK surgeons in NJ before jumping in to surgery will help avoid potential complications. Some patients do not experience 20/20 vision even after multiple LASIK procedures. In very rare cases, blindness may occur; however, this is usually related to the poor skills of the surgeon or the fact that the patient was probably not a suitable candidate for LASIK surgery. Severe dry eye can also be a potential problem even after successful vision correction.

5th Avenue Eye Center is a comprehensive vision center with branches in Old Bridge, New Jersey, as well as the Manhattan and Queens boroughs of New York City. Dr. Cohen was fellowship trained in corneal surgery at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tenn. and Catholic Medical Center in Boston, Mass. His state-of-the-art LASIK techniques and ability to correct other surgeons? mistakes have garnered international media attention on CBS, CNBC, and FOX News. Dr. Cohen teaches LASIK surgery at the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Somalia's Marka port 'seized from Islamists'

African Union and Somali troops captured the key port of Marka from Al-Qaeda-linked Shebab insurgents on Monday, the latest in a string of bases to be wrested off the extremists, officials said.

"We have taken Marka, we entered alongside the Somali government forces this morning," said Colonel Ali Houmed, the spokesman for the African Union mission in Somalia (AMISOM).

"There was some fighting, but not so heavy, most of the Shebab had fled."

The loss of Marka, some 70 kilometres (45 miles) south of the capital Mogadishu, is another major blow for the insurgents, who have been on the back foot for several months.

AU and Somali troops have made significant gains in recent months against Shebab, although the Islamists remain a major security threat. Ethiopian troops are also battling the militants from the south and west.

The loss of Marka leaves the Shebab with two major ports in southern Somalia -- Barawe and the key rebel bastion of Kismayo -- although an international naval blockade has already greatly squeezed maritime access there.

The Shebab abandoned their last fixed bases in Mogadishu a year ago, where they have since reverted to guerrilla tactics, claiming a series of suicide attacks and roadside bombs.

The Coming of the Drones | Commercial Property Executive

Federal Regulations Likely to Soon Permit Commercial Use of Unmanned Aircraft

By Dees Stribling

The Weekly World News is not a source for breaking real estate stories very often, but early in 2012 the Web site (formerly a tabloid) reported that a number of real estate brokerage firms in greater Los Angeles were ?at war,? using a new technology. ?Real estate agents began using armed predator drones to knock the competition?s drones out of the sky,? the WWN reported, adding the following touch: ?Then THAT escalated, and now real estate drones have been attacking the buildings of competitors ??

The WWN is the same publication predicting the arrival of space aliens later this year, unless of course the world ends first, so reports of real estate agents attacking each other by remote-control aircraft need to be taken with several pounds of salt. But the story has a kernel of fact. Unmanned aircraft, or drones, do have a future in real estate, both residential and commercial, and in some cases have already been used by the industry, mainly to take dramatic photographs of multimillion-dollar properties that are hard to access any other way.

A somewhat more reliable media source, the Los Angeles Times, reported earlier this year that the LAPD?s Air Division warned Los Angeles-area real estate agents not to hire operators of unmanned aircraft, since current federal regulations do not, generally speaking, permit use of the vehicles for commercial purposes, real estate or otherwise. The ban is fairly broad, prohibiting their operation in U.S airspace without specific permission, though hobbyists can fly model planes.

The rationale for the ban is fairly straightforward: The government does not want airspace cluttered willy-nilly with drones, which might pose a safety hazard for aircraft carrying people. Though it is a little odd that the LAPD would concern itself with enforcing federal regulations, the department essentially said to real estate companies that taking dramatic video footage of Brad Pitt?s Malibu home (which happens to be for sale) is going to have to wait.

But the real estate industry is not going to have to wait that long to use drones. In February, President Obama signed a law?the FAA Air Transportation Modernization and Safety Improvement Act, which had an unusual amount of bipartisan support in an otherwise divided Congress?that, among other things, will overhaul the regulations regarding the commercial use of unmanned aircraft. According to the law, the FAA must first allow police and other first-responder agencies to fly drones under two kilograms in weight (4.4 pounds), provided they fly them under 400 feet in altitude, and follow various other requirements.

Law enforcement has given every indication that it wants to use drones. The FAA has already approved their use in some law-enforcement cases, such as for the Mesa County (Colo.) Sheriff?s Office, which is testing them for various police purposes, especially search-and-rescue operations. In March, the sheriff?s office became the first U.S. public safety agency to receive an FAA Certificate of Authorization to operate drones countywide, a 3,300-square-mile area.
Under the new law, the FAA must draft new, less restrictive regulations for commercial drone use by mid-2015. No doubt as soon as the new regulations are in force, California real estate agents will want to photograph Hollywood stars? homes for sale, but the potential for unmanned aircraft is considerably wider than that. Capable of carrying still as well as video cameras, they could do the same kinds of jobs that aerial photographers do now, except that they would probably be cheaper to use, especially for companies that wanted to use them continuously. Also, they would be able to do things standard aerial photographers cannot do, such as fly rings around a property, taking a video.
Commercial Applications

?You can produce dramatic shots you couldn?t get otherwise,? said Scott Choppin, founder & CEO of the Urban Pacific Group of Cos., which specializes in developing affordable housing, as well as mixed-use and urban-infill properties. ?It?s already been demonstrated that these kinds of pictures can be useful in marketing homes, especially high-end ones, but the potential goes well beyond that.?

When you are out raising capital, Choppin said, the capabilities of drone photography as a less expensive and more flexible alternative to manned helicopter photography are fairly clear. ?Part of what you need is some sizzle to first persuade investors, and later tenants, to take a second look at your project,? he said. ?With drones, you can essentially make a little movie about the property, flying around it and its surrounds, thus presenting your project in a more memorable way. Alongside hard data, the images would help bring the property to life in the minds of potential investors and tenants?for instance, by scanning a 360-degree view from the future top floors of a multi-family or office project.

Marketing other kinds of commercial properties might not need quite the same kind of aerial-video sizzle, but Choppin said there might still be applications, especially as drone technology becomes more common and less expensive. ?In selling a warehouse or a large distribution space, you might want to give potential buyers a dynamic sense of how close the freeways or the rail lines or the intermodal facility really is to the property.?

Construction companies might also want to put drones to use. Contractors could use the aircraft to do site evaluations before they start, for instance, or find property boundaries for a single lot or for an entire subdivision. They could also record phases of development for developer or financial support reports, or use aerial photographs and video for strategic planning of material and equipment delivery and placement.

The Nature of Drones
The public is used to hearing about military drones, but a commercial-use drone is another matter altogether. One major manufacturer of commercial drones is Saskatoon, Saskatchewan-based Draganfly Innovations Inc.?the Canadians being ahead of the United States in terms of allowing their commercial use. The company makes a large variety of models, mostly as platforms for photography and videography.

Its latest unmanned aircraft, the Draganflyer X4-P, is a good example of the type of vehicles that might be taking to U.S. airspace after the FAA?s new regulations come into force. The aircraft is flown using a handheld controller that incorporates a 2.8-inch OLED touch screen. The screen displays all telemetry and flight data, including altitude, heading, bearing, helicopter battery voltage and GPS position. The controller also features an integrated dual-diversity video receiver that takes the continuous stream of video transmitted from the helicopter and displays it on a pair of video glasses. These glasses allow the operator to see in real time what the camera is seeing.

The purpose of such an aircraft, naturally, is to carry a camera or cameras, and the X4-P?s mounting system offers a camera mount that keeps the equipment isolated from the helicopter. Along with an active tilt feature to maintain the camera level in forward and backward flight, this combination creates vibration-free pictures and video, according to Draganfly. The aircraft?s on-board flight computer incorporates software that processes input from 11 individual sensors?including a barometric pressure sensor, three accelerometers, three gyroscopes, three magnetometers and a GPS receiver?to compute hundreds of calculations per second, promoting flight stability and helping to keep the aircraft under control from the ground.

The X4-P also features flight batteries with integrated protection circuits that oversee the battery condition and status, along with a battery life indicator, an ?auto-landing? feature in case the radio link to the helicopter is lost and an onboard flight-data recorder that captures all flight information on a removable memory card (a wee black box, as it were). The aircraft comes in a folding carbon-fiber airframe to fit inside a case no larger than a suitcase, so it can be stored in the trunk or back seat of a car when not in use.

It is easy to imagine the day, say in 2020, when a commercial real estate executive and their drone expert spend a few hours taking images of their latest development. After suitable editing and enhancement, the footage becomes an integral part of the property?s strategy to win funding or find tenants.

?As the technology gets more sophisticated, more companies will use it,? Choppin predicted. ?The marketing packages we use now might look primitive by comparison.?

The Daily Illini :: Sports are about life, not just winning and losing

This isn?t going to be your typical sports column.

We need to get that out of the way immediately. I hope it doesn?t make things awkward, just give me a minute to explain.

I just don?t care about the professional sports, statistics and fantasy leagues. To me, sports are life. Sports are unavoidable. Trust me, I?ve tried to avoid them.

Sports are everywhere, in principle and in theory. There are over 70 listed athletic and recreation organizations on campus in addition to the 21 Division-I sports and, of course, there?s the overwhelming presence of professional sports worldwide. Then there?s intramural activities, workout facilities and the fact that everywhere you look someone is playing something.

You might consider yourself not a sports person or a sports fan, or think you have absolutely no interest in sports, but really, sports are a gateway between the principles of play and reality.

I look at the athletes? backstories: How behind the fame and the money and the phenomenally unrealistic athletic capabilities, they are just like us.

One of my good friends constantly tells me that every touching sports story is the same: Successful athletes find out they have a terminal illness, then they attempt to fight said illness while continuing to compete. Then the athletes either overcome the illness or pass away, thus concluding a heartbreaking tragedy or a heroic tale.

This is untrue.

There?s so many different story lines that these athletes go through, so many different paths they take in their quest for personal fulfillment, just like any human.

That?s what everyone is searching for, right? Happiness, success and greatness ? or simply the ability to go to bed with a feeling of contentment.

The fact that everyone, everywhere, has some connection with sports makes athletes the perfect humans to relate to. The pure essence of the game, worldwide popularity, accessibility and ability to relate to athletes is something nonexistent in any other area of life.

Take the London Olympics, for example: With 36 sports offered, there was something that most everyone could find an interest in. And with 204 countries represented, most everyone could find someone to cheer for, with every athlete came a different story of hard work, success and failure.

I wrote a 10-part series about an Olympic hopeful from Illinois, male gymnast Paul Ruggeri.

I was able to relate every stage of his journey to my personal life: the excitement and passion of pursuing a dream and the frustration when facing roadblocks. Then came the anxiety and restlessness of waiting for results, the satisfaction after minor successes and the indescribable feeling of doing everything you possibly could and falling short.

Ruggeri ultimately didn?t make the U.S. Olympic team. He?s a human like everybody else, even though he could probably scale a building and then do multiple back flips on top of it.

His journey of ups and downs, differing emotions and a progression through stages of life are applicable to your work life, personal relationships and education. Through sports, you can emphasize with these feelings on a large platform.

When Gabby Douglas became the first American gymnast to win the individual and team all-around gold medals, she inspired not only young gymnasts and African-Americans across the nation, but any young person with dreams about any form of success.

Look at cyclist Lance Armstrong, whose fall from grace was displayed to the entire world. Every part of his story is inspirational and relatable, even now. Life is continuing for him, despite everything that?s happened. Armstrong is the perfect example of real life, where people face remarkable successes and heartbreaking failures and even the intuition to walk away from it all.

Every athlete has a story and the story never stops, even after the pinnacle of success is reached ? just like with all of our lives.

There?s a little bit of an athlete or sports fan in everyone, even if you?ve never realized it before.

This year, we?re going to explore everybody?s inner athletic persona. We?re going to find the less common themes and angles and the less talked about activities. We?re going to travel the bridge between life and sports and everything in between.

We can look at athletes and learn from them, even if we never pick up a ball.

No Decision On Property Tax ? Noonan ? 98FM: Dublin's Best Music ...

The Finance Minister Michael Noonan is insisting that the details of a new property tax have not been decided upon.

It follows reports over the weekend that the Troika has been told how the Government plans to assess properties based on their value.

Speaking in Limerick earlier however, Mr. Noonan said nothing has been finalised yet and the finer details will be made known in due course.

He said the only things that are certain are the facts that the tax will be introduced next year and it will be collected by the Revenue Commissioner.

Meanwhile,?Fianna F?il has hit out at the plans to introduce the controversial tax by saying there?is no point in implementing a property tax which people cannot afford to pay.

Fianna F?il?s finance spokesperson Michael McGrath says people?s inability to pay must be taken into account.

?Are they really going to expect the 130,000 families in mortgage arrears to pay a property tax? Are they going to expect people in negative equity to pay a property tax?

?I think that the key issue is the ability to pay and at this point in time, given where the country is at and the very real difficulties people are facing, I genuinely do not believe there is an ability to pay ?400 or ?500 in many cases.?
