Repeated knocks to the head leads to newly recognized brain disease

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Reports on the danger of head trauma in athletes and soldiers has pervaded the news in recent years. NFL and NHL player deaths have catapulted this problem into the limelight, with stories appearing in the New York Times, NPR, ESPN, 60 Minutes and even television entertainment shows. Media attention has raced far ahead of the science on this degenerative condition. But scientists are catching on. They have given this disease its own definition -- chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE).

Different from traumatic brain injury, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's, or ALS, they say CTE can strike adult and youths alike. Special coverage by Alzforum, the leading news source on Alzheimer's and related diseases research, summarizes the status of research in this burgeoning field as researchers take steps to diagnose and treat CTE.

?CTE can start months or years after brain trauma has occurred, either in contact sports, military service, or perhaps even partner violence,? Admiral Regina Benjamin, the U.S. Surgeon General, recently told scientists and advocates at the first-ever CTE conference at the Cleveland Clinic Lou Ruvo Center for Brain Health in Las Vegas, Nevada. There, experts came together to define CTE, exchange the latest data, develop a diagnosis, and lay out a research plan (see Part 1).

Some of the newest data comes from boxers and other martial artists who have joined the Professional Fighters Brain Health Study in Las Vegas. The fighters? history as well as fight statistics are combined with yearly mental tests, brain scans, speech samples, and a blood draw. The aim is similar to studies in Alzheimer?s that have helped identify early signs of disease and track its progression. Scientists want to find out how concussions match up with brain damage and symptoms. Once this study ends, it may generate a tool to help determine when fighters should retire (see Part 2).

Additional information will come from DETECT, a biomarker study of football players, as well as a growing tissue bank of athletes? and military veterans? brains. Of 136 tissue donations, 100 brains have been analyzed and 80 had CTE hallmarks. They showed a unique pattern of brain change?expansion in its fluid-filled cavities and shrinkage of its medial temporal lobe?and extraordinary deposits of a toxic form of the tau protein that expand with age. From this data, scientists have begun to outline stages of CTE from beginning to end. It seems some athletes and soldiers who have been diagnosed with Alzheimer?s or Parkinson?s may have had CTE instead (see Part 3).

Other research suggests that in CTE, toxic proteins creep from the site of impact to further areas of the brain. Because toxicity moves between cells, not people, researchers refer to the spread as ?templating,? not ?infectious.? They are developing mouse models to help determine how this spread occurs (see Part 4).

Scientists are also drafting up the best way to diagnose the disease during a person?s life (see Part 5) and are pushing for measures to prevent CTE in children, who are more susceptible to developing the condition after head trauma (Part 6).?

Nissan shows 'The Dark Knight Rises' Juke Nismo

When he isn?t blasting down the highway in the Tumbler or the Lambo, even Bruce Wayne may desire something a little more practical and a little less extravagant to drive on his day off.

This may be right up his alley ? Nissan has released a special one-off Juke Nismo to celebrate its partnership with Warner Bros as well as the DVD and Blu-Ray release of Christopher Nolan?s third Batman film.

Developed by London-based Nissan Design Europe, the car cannot be bought or bid for; Nissan is giving only one lucky UK resident the chance to drive it home, through its Thrill Test online competition at www.builttothrill.co.uk.

Its official name is?The Dark Knight Rises?Juke Nismo, and it features matt black paintwork, a shark?s fin antenna and Bat insignia on the front grille, tailgate, kickplates and suede-trimmed Nismo sports seat headrests.

Downlighters mounted under the door mirrors project the famous Bat signal on to the floor, while an uplighter projects the same on to the black headlining inside.?There?s also black 18-inch Nismo alloy wheels with red detailing.

Otherwise the car is essentially a Juke Nismo, featuring the same?200 PS turbocharged 1.6 litre engine driven through a six-speed manual, the same uprated suspension setup and the same bodykit. 0-100 km/h is dealt with in under eight seconds.

UK order taking for the Juke Nismo starts in January, with first deliveries set for March. Two transmissions will be available ? a 2WD manual and 4WD CVT.?Prices?and specs will be released closer to launch.

Kia did something similar recently with its Optima K5, in collaboration with?DC and RIDES magazine. If you were the Dark Knight, which of the two would you prefer?

Obese children more vulnerable to food advertising

ScienceDaily (Nov. 30, 2012) ? Rates of childhood obesity have tripled in the past 30 years, and food marketing has been implicated as one factor contributing to this trend. Every year, companies spend more than $10 billion in the US marketing their food and beverages to children; 98% of the food products advertised to children on television are high in fat, sugar, or sodium. In a new study scheduled for publication in The Journal of Pediatrics, researchers used neuroimaging to study the effects of food logos on obese and healthy weight children.

Amanda S. Bruce, PhD, and colleagues from the University of Missouri-Kansas City and the University of Kansas Medical Center assessed 10 healthy weight and 10 obese children, ages 10-14 years, using both self-reported measures of self-control and functional magnetic resonance imaging, which uses blood flow as a measure of brain activity. Dr. Bruce states, ?We were interested in how brain responses to food logos would differ between obese and healthy weight children.? The children were shown 60 food logos and 60 nonfood logos, and functional magnetic resonance imaging scans indicated which sections of the brain reacted to the familiar logos being shown.

Obese children showed greater activation in some reward regions of the brain than healthy weight children when shown the food logos. Healthy weight children showed greater brain activation in regions of the brain associated with self-control, when shown food versus nonfood logos. Overall, healthy weight children self-reported more self-control than the obese children. This adds to the body of research showing that in certain situations, healthy weight individuals experience greater activation of control regions of the brain than obese individuals.

?This study provides preliminary evidence that obese children may be more vulnerable to the effects of food advertising. One of the keys to improving health-related decision-making may be found in the ability to improve self-control,? notes Dr. Bruce. Self-control training may be a beneficial addition to obesity and behavioral health interventions, and may lead to greater success in weight loss.

COLLEGE FOOTBALL: UConn's 'Johnny Football' was big part of big win (video)

STORRS ? There was little warning for Johnny McEntee to get ready.

Chandler Whitmer, who wrestled away UConn?s starting quarterback spot from McEntee with an impressive showing during spring drills, wobbled his way off the field after taking a vicious hit in Saturday?s upset win over Big East preseason favorite Louisville.

McEntee, who had not thrown a pass since a season-opening win over UMass, didn?t exactly light the world on fire as he completed just two of seven passes. However, one of them went to Shakim Phillips for a 17-yard touchdown in the second overtime.

McEntee, who could be pressed into duty again on Saturday when the Huskies host Cincinnati in a game UConn needs to win to become bowl eligible, just viewed his role in overtime as simply needing to deliver when given the opportunity.

?It was just a big win for the program and I was happy to be a part of it,? McEntee said. ?It was a good feeling. You don?t know if you are helping the team at all or what your role is. To be able to contribute something, the whole offense did a great job during that overtime scoring drive and it was just a great feeling.?

McEntee?s teammates jokingly called him ?Johnny Football? ? the nickname of Texas A&M?s Heisman Trophy candidate Johnny Manziel. McEntee was having none of that, but it was still a sign of the level of appreciation his teammates have for the way McEntee handled losing his starting job.

?Johnny has handled everything terrific,? UConn coach Paul Pasqualoni said. ?Johnny is a team guy. Johnny is interested in doing whatever is in the best interest of the team. Johnny hasn?t been anything but a team guy from Day One. He is a senior, this is his senior class and it is a program he has worked at for four years. To go on the road in the Big East against a Top 20 team and win the game in the end, that is something that is an achievement that is a memory that this team, Johnny McEntee and the seniors will have forever. That is something they will never forget ever. They may forget their wife?s birthday, but they will never forget that win in Louisville.?

McEntee has toiled in relative obscurity behind the scenes, not making waves even when Whitmer was named the starter on the eve of the start of fall camp.

?At first it was a little tough, but I just accepted it,? McEntee said. ?I just wanted to have fun with my fellow seniors and guys I came in with.?

Pasqualoni didn?t have much of an update on Whitmer?s status and he would not even confirm if he was diagnosed with a concussion.

?Chandler Whitmer is doing pretty good,? Pasqualoni said. ?We are really going to limit his work (Tuesday) and re-evaluate it each day. We are optimistic as we go through the week that Chandler will be available. It will be a day-to-day evaluation process.

?We are going to cut Chandler?s (reps) down so at least (Tuesday) Johnny will get reps and of course Scotty (McCummings) will get reps. Chandler will make most of his work (as) mental reps. As we go through the week, we have plenty of time. Chandler has gone through this stuff over and over again and we are just going to work through it and see how it goes during the week and make a decision.?

UCONN PRESIDENT ADDRESSES BIG EAST RUMORS

Following a press conference announcing women?s basketball coach Geno Auriemma?s partnership with the university?s school of business for a leadership conference held at Mohegan Sun Casino on April 29-30, UConn president Susan Herbst was asked for an update on the conference realignment rumors.

Herbst had no comment when asked whether the Atlantic Coast Conference was closing in on making an offer for the Huskies to become an ACC school and also offered a no comment when pressed to see if UConn would accept the invite from the ACC.

Herbst talked in general terms about putting the interests of the student-athletes first.

?They are there to work hard, have fun and give us a lot of joy, especially in the rough winter and we want (them) to be a success academically,? Herbst said. ?I think my role is to try to keep perspective on the student-athletes.?

The Future of Marriage and the Wisdom of Tradition

As Sherif Girgis, Robert P. George, and I argue in The Wall Street Journal, the future of marriage is the future of humanity.

Conservatives rightly uphold the institution of marriage between a man and a woman because marriage is the seedbed of society, the necessary precondition for limited self-government.

But not everyone sees it this way. With the Supreme Court expected to decide this week whether to hear challenges to traditional marriage laws, now is the time for citizens to think deeply about the nature and purpose of marriage.

Marriage unites a man and woman holistically?emotionally and bodily, in acts of conjugal love and in the children such love brings forth?for the whole of life.

In the revisionist view of marriage, however, what sets marriage apart from other bonds is emotional intensity?what one philosopher refers to as your ?number one person.? But nothing about emotional union requires it to be permanent. Or limited to two. Or sexual, much less sexually exclusive. Or inherently oriented to family life and shaped by its demands.

As a result, redefining marriage to include same-sex relationships would harm the common good as it obscures the true nature of marriage and thus weakens the marriage culture. Weakening marital norms would hurt children and spouses, especially the poorest among us.

Empty appeals to ?equality? get us nowhere. As my co-authors and I argue:

Every marriage policy draws lines, leaving out some types of relationships. Equality forbids arbitrary line-drawing. But we cannot know which lines are arbitrary without answering two questions: What is marriage, and why does it matter for policy?

The conjugal and revisionist views are two rival answers; neither is morally neutral. Each is supported by some religious and secular worldviews but rejected by others.? So voters must decide: Which view is right?

The best philosophy, theology, sociology, and what G. K. Chesterton called the democracy of the dead?tradition?all suggest that the conjugal view is right.

As we argue in our new book What Is Marriage? Man and Woman: A Defense, marriage is a uniquely comprehensive union. It involves a union of hearts and minds but also a bodily union made possible by sexual complementarity. Marriage is inherently extended and enriched by procreation and family life and objectively calls for similarly all-encompassing commitment, norms of permanence, and exclusivity.

In the op-ed, we detail why conservatives would be ill-advised to abandon support for conjugal marriage even if it hadn?t won more support than Governor Mitt Romney in every state where marriage was on the ballot.

Read our WSJ article here; our book may be ordered here.

5 Tips for an Organized Wallet (or Purse) ? Narrow Bridge Finance

I once I wrote about how I was on the verge of the Costanza Wallet. I have learned more about keeping my wallet de-cluttered and small in the time since, and got it down to a list of my top five tips for an organized wallet.

1. Get Rid of What You Don?t Use

I always have my credit card, a backup card, debit card, insurance card, and ID on me, plus a little cash. Why would you ever really need more than that? You don?t. I used to keep store loyalty cards in my wallet, but thought about how often I really used them and the value they gave me. I didn?t get rid of them, but did get them out of my wallet, which leads to tip #2.

2. Keep Stuff Elsewhere

My of the time, I have my car with me when I am going to a meal anywhere that has a punch card or loyalty program. So why should I keep those discount cards in my wallet? I keep them in a small compartment in my car.

Even better, I keep most of my cards on my phone. With apps like Google Wallet, Apple?s Passbook, or my favorite card organizer app, Key Ring. With Key Ring, I can just scan my phone and don?t need an extra card hogging up space in my wallet.

3. Force Yourself to Downsize with a Smaller Wallet

I used to carry a tri-fold wallet that had enough space for every loyalty card I could imagine in addition to all of my credit cards. When I got a smaller bi-fold wallet, I ensured I would never go Costanza again.

I mentioned the few things I carry above, and I don?t really have room for anything more. In fact, I have a smaller ?weekend wallet? that has a built in bottle opener for a little extra fun. It can?t hold more than a little cash, a credit card, and a driver?s license.

4. Be Prepared for Emergencies

One of the benefits of a smaller wallet is that you have less to worry about if you lose it. I don?t have much in my wallet these days, but I do have a very quick list of what I have to do in case my wallet vanishes.

I have a file at home, in a safe place, with a photocopy of the cards I keep in my wallet. If it is ever stolen or lost, I can quickly call the credit card companies and have the cards cancelled without any big worry.

5. Rinse and Repeat

This system only works if you keep on top of it. By adding new credit cards, loyalty cards, receipts, business cards, pictures, and other scraps to your wallet, it will get out of control again sometime soon. Stay ahead of the curve by keeping your wallet minimized and clean. I have a calendar reminder to do so every other week just in case.

What Do You Do?

How do you keep your wallet clean? Let us know in the comments.

#My2K: Obama uses Twitter to prod Congress

President Barack Obama sits in front of a screen displaying a question he tweeted during a "Twitter Town Hall"??

President Barack Obama urged Americans on Wednesday to help him pressure Congress to prevent a Jan. 1 tax hike on the middle class, saying it was up to the public to make sure Washington doesn't "screw this up."

"When the American people speak loudly enough, lo and behold Congress listens," Obama said, flanked by Americans who answered the White House's call to detail what that tax increase would cost them personally.

"We really need to get this right. I can only do it with the help of the American people," the president said. "It's too important for Washington to screw this up."

Obama's remarks were part of a ramped-up public campaign to pressure Republicans in Congress, who have resisted his calls for letting Bush-era tax cuts that chiefly benefit the wealthiest Americans expire. The president wants to extend reductions on income up to $200,000 for individuals and $250,000 for families. But he wants taxes above that level to rise in order to spare popular government programs from the budget-cutter's ax.

Republicans want to extend the tax cuts for higher earners, insisting that a tax hike on that group will reduce investments that generate jobs at a time when the economy is still sputtering and unemployment remains high. The GOP has signaled it would be willing to consider boosting tax revenue as long as Democrats agree to overhaul popular entitlement programs like Medicare or Medicaid. But key Democrats have refused to include those programs in talks on avoiding the "fiscal cliff" of tax increases and spending cuts due to take effect Jan. 1.

"Let's keep middle-class tax low. That's what our economy needs, that's what the American people deserve," Obama said. "And if we get this part of it right, then a lot of the other issues surrounding deficit reduction in a fair and balanced and responsible way are going to be a whole lot easier.

"If we get this wrong the economy's going to go south," the president warned. "It's going to be much more difficult for us to balance our budgets and deal with our deficits because, if the economy's not strong, that means more money's going out in things like unemployment insurance and less money's coming in in terms of tax receipts and it just actually makes our deficit worse."

Obama urged Americans who agree with him to call, write and tweet lawmakers (using the hashtag #My2K), or post messages on their Facebook pages. "Do what it takes to communicate a sense of urgency. We don't have a lot of time. We've got a few weeks to get this thing done."

Still, he said, "I am confident that we will get it done."

The White House says that "a typical middle-class family of four" would pay Uncle Sam an additional $2,200 unless tax cuts are extended for them.

That $2,200 figure is the inspiration for #My2K, part of what the White House describes as an "online push" behind the president's approach. Obama has highlighted Twitter hashtags in past disputes with Republicans: #40dollars in the fight over the payroll tax holiday and #dontdoublemyrate in a feud over student loans.

The president, who spoke to top Republican and Democratic leaders over the weekend, was to make brief public remarks at the top of a meeting with his Cabinet at 3 p.m. before huddling with senior executives from major American corporations.

Here is the list of attendees, as provided by the White House:

? Frank Blake, Chairman and CEO, the Home Depot
? Lloyd Blankfein, Chairman and CEO, Goldman Sachs Group
? Joe Echeverria, CEO, Deloitte LLP
? Ken Frazier, President and CEO, Merck and Co.
? Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, Coca Cola
? Terry Lundgren, Chairman, President and CEO, Macy's Inc.
? Marissa Mayer, CEO and President, Yahoo!
? Douglas Oberhelman, Chairman and CEO, Caterpillar
? Ian Read, Chairman and CEO, Pfizer
? Brian Roberts, Chairman and CEO, Comcast
? Ed Rust, Chairman and CEO, State Farm Insurance Co.
? Arne Sorenson, President and CEO, Marriott
? Randall Stephenson, Chairman and CEO, AT&T
? Patricia Woertz, President and CEO, Archer Daniels Midland

The fiscal cliff refers to an economically painful set of tax hikes and deep spending cuts that come into effect Jan. 1 unless Congress and the president reach a deal.

(AP) ? Egypt's President Mohammed Morsi told the country's top judges Monday that he did not infringe on their authority when he seized near absolute powers, setting the stage for a prolonged showdown on the eve of mass protests planned by both supporters and opponents of the Islamist leader.

The uncompromising stance came during a meeting between Morsi and members of the Supreme Judiciary Council in a bid to resolve a four-day crisis that has plunged the country into a new round of turmoil with clashes between the two sides that have left one protester dead and hundreds wounded.

The judiciary, the main target of Morsi's edicts, also has pushed back, calling the decrees a power grab and an "assault" on the branch's independence. Judges and prosecutors stayed away from many courts in Cairo and other cities on Sunday and Monday.

A spokesman said Morsi told the judges that he acted within his right as the nation's sole source of legislation when he issued decrees putting himself above judicial oversight. The president also extended the same immunity to two bodies dominated by his Islamist allies ? a panel drafting a new constitution and parliament's mostly toothless upper chamber.

The spokesman, Yasser Ali, also told reporters that Morsi assured the judges that the decrees did not in any way "infringe" on the judiciary.

Ali's comments signaled Morsi's resolve not to back down or compromise on the constitutional amendments he announced last week, raising the likelihood of more violence as both sides planned competing rallies in Cairo on Tuesday.

Opposition activists have denounced Morsi's decrees as a blatant power grab, and refused to enter a dialogue with the presidency before the edicts are rescinded. The president has vigorously defended the new powers, saying they are a necessary temporary measure to implement badly needed reforms and protect Egypt's transition to democracy after last year's ouster of his predecessor Hosni Mubarak.

Morsi says her wants to retain the new powers until the new constitution is adopted in a nationwide referendum and parliamentary elections are held, a time line that stretches to the middle of next year.

Many members of the judiciary were appointed under Mubarak, drawing allegations, even by some of Morsi's critics, that they are trying to perpetuate the regime's corrupt practices. But opponents are angry that the decrees leave Morsi without any check on his power.

Morsi, a member of the Muslim Brotherhood who became Egypt's first freely elected president in June, was quoted by Ali as telling his prime minister and security chiefs earlier Monday that his decrees were designed to "end the transitional period as soon as possible."

His comments appeared to run contrary to a prediction made earlier Monday by Justice Minister Ahmed Mekki that a resolution of the crisis was imminent. Mekki, who has been mediating between the judiciary and the presidency to try to defuse the crisis, did not give any details.

The dispute is the latest crisis to roil the Arab world's most populous nation, which has faced mass protests, a rise in crime and economic woes since the initial euphoria following the popular uprising that ousted Mubarak after nearly 30 years of autocratic rule.

Morsi's decrees were motivated in part by a court ruling in June that dissolved the parliament's more powerful lower chamber known as the People's Assembly, which was dominated by the Muslim Brotherhood and ultraconservative Islamists.

The verdict meant that legislative authority first fell in the hands of the then-ruling military, but Morsi grabbed it in August after he ordered the retirement of the army's two top generals.

Morsi's decrees, which were announced Thursday, saved the constitutional panel and the upper chamber from a fate similar to that of the People's Assembly because several courts looking into the legal basis of their creation were scheduled to issue verdicts to disband them.

Ayman al-Sayyad, a member of Morsi's 17-member advisory council, said the presidential aides asked the president in meetings over the weekend to negotiate a way out of the crisis and enter dialogue with all political forces to iron out differences over the nation's new constitution.

Secular and Christian politicians have withdrawn from the 100-seat panel tasked with drafting the charter to protest what they call the hijacking of the process by Morsi's Islamist allies. They fear the Islamists would produce a draft that infringes on the rights of liberals, women and the minority Christians.

The president, al-Sayyad added, would shortly take decisions that would spare the nation a "possible sea of blood." He did not elaborate.

The dispute over the decrees, the latest in the country's bumpy transition to democracy, has taken a toll on the nation's already ailing economy. Egypt's benchmark stock index dropped more than 9.5 percentage points on Sunday, the first day of trading since Morsi's announcement. It fell again Monday during early trading but recovered to close up by 2.6 percentage points.

It has also played out in urban street protests across the country, including in the capital, Cairo, and the Mediterranean port city of Alexandria.

Thousands gathered in Damanhoor for the funeral procession of 15-year-old Islam Abdel-Maksoud, who was killed Sunday when a group of anti-Morsi protesters tried to storm the local offices of the political arm of the president's fundamentalist Muslim Brotherhood, Egypt's most powerful political group.

The Health Ministry said Monday that 444 people also have been wounded nationwide, including 49 who remain hospitalized, since the clashes erupted on Friday, according to a statement carried by the official news agency MENA.

Morsi's office said in a statement that he had ordered the country's top prosecutor to investigate the teenager's death, along with that of another young man shot in Cairo last week during demonstrations to mark the anniversary of deadly protests last year that called for an end to the then-ruling military.

Up to 10,000 people marched through Cairo's Tahrir Square, the birthplace of the uprising against Mubarak, for the funeral procession of 16-year-old Gaber Salah, who succumbed to his head wounds on Sunday. Salah was wounded in clashes with police in the capital during protests against the Brotherhood earlier last week, before the decrees were issued.

Mourners marched with the Salah's body laid in a coffin wrapped in Egypt's red, white and black flag from Tahrir to a cemetery east of the city. Already images of Salah have appeared on Tahrir's walls. Underneath the mages were the words: "Your blood will spark a new revolution."

Salah was a member of April 6, one of the key right groups behind the anti-Mubarak uprising. He was also a founder of a Facebook group called "Against the Muslim Brotherhood."

Also on Monday, Human Rights Watch said that Morsi's decrees undermined the rule of law in Egypt and appeared to give him the power to issue emergency-style measures at any time for vague reasons. In Berlin, a spokesman for German Chancellor Angela Merkel said in thinly veiled criticism that the separation of powers was a fundamental principle of any democratic constitution.

Morsi, added spokesman Steffen Seibert, has a "great responsibility" to lead Egypt to a "democratically ordered political system" that rests on that principle.

Why hello!

Ciao.

I wonder how I missed your intro. Anyway, never fear, VP is here.

Glad that you decided to come back to role playing. If you're rusty you could always hit our Roleplay Academy and message a Scholar/mentor (denoted in dark blue text usernames like moi) so that you can engage in a one on one session of practice to polish your skills.

Series based/fan-fiction:
I haven't tried any yet, but I'm interested in doing something with these
Mass Effect
Halo
Supernatural

There's probably a lot more that I might be interested, but I know these are definitely on the list. As for romance, I think it does much for character relationships and development as a whole and should not be neglected. However, a plot focused solely on romance seems a bit forced and unnatural like a "dog trying to lay an egg," as Simon Cowell put it (I laughed so hard when he said that on the XFactor.) That's what I think.

Anyway, it's nice to meet you too.

If you have any questions (I believe I answered one that you had before in another introduction thread) or issues, don't hesitate to ask. The staff and I (designated with different colors to identify specific jobs) are here to help you out.

So on behalf of everyone here at RPG, RolePlayGateway, we're glad to have you here.

Thread: Made a trammel - Family Woodworking

We had some 5/8" ply left over from putting up a shed, so the memsahib asked me to cut the largest circles I could get out of them. I figured the easiest way to do this would be with the cheap (29.95) spinsaw I bought at Canadian Tire last year, but the trammel will only do a 12" circle, and I needed 22?".

So, I got to work, went down to the local HD and bought a narrow aluminum metre stick and a couple of flat head ?-20 screws and nuts. Then I cut the ruler off at 18?" so I could cut a 36" circle (or 90cm. if necessary)

Then I drilled a couple of ?" holes to match the existing trammel, which connect to the base of the spinsaw, countersunk the holes,

Cyber Monday: 3 Tips to Prevent Identity Theft - Top Legal News

Cyber Monday:...

Shopping online on Cyber Monday avoids many of the problems with Black Friday crowds, but it has its own downside: identity theft.

Sure you don?t have to jostle with the hordes of sale-crazed shoppers or look sadly at picked-over merchandise, but buying things online comes with a few risks. You?ll be sending financial information over the Internet, which means you need to be careful that it isn?t compromised.

It?s good to have anti-virus protection and keep an eye out for fraudulent charges on your bank accounts, but there are some other specific steps you can take while shopping this holiday season. Here are three suggestions for staying safe:

  1. Use strong and unique passwords. Many websites ask you to create an account when you shop online and then log in when you shop. Vary your passwords and make sure each one is strong. That means using a combination of letters, numbers, and symbols, and using both uppercase and lowercase characters. Write your passwords down on paper if you have to, but reusing passwords is an invitation for identity theft.
  2. Only use secure Wi-Fi networks. Free Wi-Fi at the coffee shop or at the public library are great, but they aren?t secure. Those kinds of Internet connections are more likely to have people trying to hack into your computer and steal your information. If you?re going to enter your credit card number, only do it on a password protected Wi-Fi network that you trust. Better yet, do it on your home wireless network so you know exactly who?s on it.
  3. Buy from reputable online merchants. There are scammers out there looking to take advantage of Cyber Monday shoppers who use search engines to find deals. Pick the stores you want to buy from and use their website?s ?search? function to find the items you want. Don?t give your credit card information to stores you don?t know and don?t trust. Check that the page where you enter your financial information is secured with an ?https? web address.

Despite your best efforts, it?s possible your computer or online accounts may still get hacked. If that happens to you, know that there are lawyers ready to help you get your finances back on track.

Five classic cars to give thanks for | Digest about Car's news

In addition to home, hearth and family, this is the time of the year that car people reflect on the classics that have made the automotive world a better place. Here are five that we are especially thankful for:

1. Ford Mustang: The original pony car celebrates its 50th anniversary next year. The Mustang was a car like no other. Although designed for the youth market, it appealed to nearly every demographic. Little has changed. We?re particularly big fans of the original 1964 ?-66 Mustang as well as the present model introduced in 2005.

2. Chevrolet Camaro: The Camaro may have been inspired by the Mustang and it may have come to market a few years later, but bowtie fans had a lot to be enthusiastic about, particularly when the cars butted heads in the legendary SCCA Trans Am race series of the late ?60s and early ?70s. Like the Mustang, we like the bookend effect of the original 1967-69 cars and the present iteration of the Camaro.

3. Chevrolet Corvette: It?s difficult to imagine a world without the Corvette, but GM was ready to kill it after the disappointing 1954 model year. Only the appearance of the 1955 Ford Thunderbird (GM couldn?t countenance the appearance of having been driven from the two-seater market by Ford) and the arrival of savior Zora Arkus-Duntov ensured its survival to the present. The iconic 1963-67 Sting Ray celebrates its 50th anniversary next year along with the 60th of the Corvette itself.

4. Porsche 911: The Porsche 911 is a car that shouldn?t really work at all: Its engine is in the wrong place for well-balanced handling and its basic style is going on a half century old. Yet it continues to inspire lust in everyone from engineers to hedge fund managers. We?re partial to the classic air-cooled models built from 1978-89. They?re nearly bulletproof and some can be bought quite reasonably.

5. Jaguar XKE: As legend has it, none other than Enzo Ferrari wept when the XKE was unveiled ? he called it the most beautiful car he?d ever seen. XKEs (or E-Types to the rest of the world) have been frequent museum exhibits and not just at automotive museums ? the Museum of Modern Art in New York displayed one for many years. It truly is a piece of moving sculpture the likes of which hasn?t been seen again, although its DNA clearly shows up in the new Jaguar F-Type.

Just What Is A Guarantor Personal Loan? | Beach Lungis

Just about all men or women checking out this specific commentary might have heard about the expression "guarantor loan" however could possibly not have an understanding of specifically what it all will mean. So what's a guarantor loan plus the way it might assist an individual? A guarantor loan is actually a funding contract which expects the guarantee from a 3rd party. Many people decide to use this particular category of loan program since they're not able to meet the criteria for a personal loan independently. Regularly, folks with zero and also sub par credit scores will need the warranty of a third party to actually obtain a loan. In cases where individuals who possess a below average credit standing make an application for a loan program, his / her financing request can often be turned away by the lending company basically because they might not be in the position to repay the loan. Even so, the lending company might provide financing when a guarantor is actually in a position to pay off the money whenever the applicant is not able to repay. Any of these loans normally involve printed agreements that must be signed by the debtor in addition to the guarantor.

There are different choices of guarantor loan product that people with negative credit scores and / or modest income can usually get. In view that a guarantor loan refers to a 3rd party reassurance for repayment of the borrowed funds, this specific title will be appropriate for practically all models of borrowing options. To provide an example, grad students nearly always will not hold any personal credit history which can ensure that it is next to impossible for them all to achieve a student loan. Even so, they can have a lending product if any individual having a very good credit record wants to become a guarantor. Folks with a small net income or just an undesirable credit rating would probably require a guarantor to get a home mortgage, personal financial loan, car finance and also other types of loan program.

The guarantor may be a relative or an acquaintance who may be wanting to lend you a hand. Now and then, firms can even consent to be the guarantor whenever you apply for a bank loan. To end up being a guarantor you need to carry a first-rate credit standing but also possess the capacity to pay back the finance if the individual is not able to pay up. Normally, the financial institution will certainly take a look at the resources together with the pay packet of your guarantor in advance of allowing a loan.

A spoken guarantee via the guarantor is not really satisfactory to execute a financing deal. Guarantor loan products are actually completed only after a thorough commitment is inked with the guarantor combined with the consumer. These printed forms offer the loan merchant the legal right to seek repayment from the guarantor if perhaps the borrower doesn't repay.

You can find more information about and apply for a guarantor loan at http://www.easynofeeloans.co.uk/guarantor-loans.html.

The First Steps On Your Self Help Journey - Empower Network

Self help can be a smart thing to do and help you turn your life around. Doing so is a way to begin turning your life around. The advice provided below will assist you in determining how you can help yourself.

You must stop spending your time worrying. Worrying is simply focusing on something that hasn?t happened and letting your fears take over. By preparing for a worst case scenario, you can focus your energies on more positive thoughts. Doing so will allow you to feel ready for what may come.

When putting effort into your personal development, assign a high value to that which is the best. This means that you must try your best and value that.

When beginning your self improvement plan, set attainable goals for the short term and long term. You need to set some goals for the long haul; they can put things into perspective.

It is impossible to make everyone happy, so make yourself the first priority. Do not focus on your own happiness to the exclusion of others? needs, but definitely make it a priority. Make goals that are in line with your values and you will be happier.

You should stay in great physical condition in order to get the best out of personal development. Getting enough sleep, having a healthy diet, and exercising regularly are simple activities that keep energy high, and it gives you a better chance at being successful with your self improvement. While it appears easy and simple, getting in shape can also be very challenging.

Take every available opportunity to improve yourself. You should not fear making decisions even if you do not feel as sure about it as you would like to be. Good instincts are the result of successful decisions. Even when you make a bad decision, you can learn valuable lessons from your experience. If you make a wrong move, you will know next time to do something different.

Whatever you might think you need in life, remember that nothing takes place without action. You must actively engage in life rather than sitting on the sidelines. Don?t be a spectator who isn?t participating in your world. Take action and live!

Establish reachable goals to increase your feeling of accomplishment and satisfaction in life. By discovering your weaknesses and working on them, it is possible to evolve into a better person.

Stress is an enemy of happiness. While experiencing stress, our entire body is affected in both physical and mental ways. Take care of the stress you have in your mind by thinking clearly. Take some time off regularly to relax and reflect. Taking a little bit of time for yourself will help you stay calm, and keep your goals in mind.

Specific Goal

People who are looking for personal development methods often make the mistake of setting goals that are too vague or too hard to target. Make a specific goal for yourself. Having a specific goal will help you to get better results.

As we have shown, educated self help decisions will benefit your life. Additionally, you have to stay persistent to see results. Apply the advice from this article, and you will be well on your way to better living.

Activist Post: Google and Microsoft Investing in a Future of ...

Nicholas West
Activist Post

Augmented reality apps for the iPhone have been around for years, and continue to grow in popularity. The next phase of evolution is to merge smartphone capabilities into a wearable interface. Google has announced Project Glass, which is advancing toward a major release of augmented reality glasses in 2014, as seen in the video below:

The systems are in place, but as yet have been available only through external devices. All that has been needed to create an all-encompassing new reality is to integrate information into the everyday human experiential view. Microsoft is now jumping into the ring with its own developments, which at this point seems to be geared strictly toward entertainment venues and video games, but hints at a major shift toward investing in wearable computing, as well as entertainment systems that can observe those being entertained.

The actual principles behind first-person, human-computer interface systems have been around for many decades - it can be seen in combat zones around the world through the military?Heads Up Display system (HUD). What began pre-WWII for fighter pilots, is now finding its way into the consumer market through video games,?vehicles, and info-glasses. Contact lenses are also already in development by the Department of Defense through a system called?iOptik?- which is also projected to be available to consumers in 2014.

Google is clearly investing heavily in wearable computing; along with Project Glass, they also have patented "smart glove" technology which offers the following:

electronics including cameras on the fingertips, a compass, gyroscopes, accelerometers and other motion detectors embedded in the fingers. The palm section plays host to the CPU, RAM and local storage, and wireless communication chips are mounted on the backside.
...The cameras could be used to acquire a highly-magnified view of the world around them while the sensors would be the centerpiece to applications similar to what we use on smartphones like navigation. The wireless aspect could leech information from local open networks, satellites, or provide communication between a pair of Smart Gloves. (Source)
As with nearly all computer interface and intelligence-driven systems, the funding and implementation has its origins in the military-industrial complex, and are likely to have been in existence for at least decades before trickling down to the consumer level.

While info-glass makers Google and Microsoft both naturally tout the entertainment value, as well as the value of "capturing those special moments," it would be naive not to also consider the ease with which people would begin to surveil and record one another. As this technology flourishes, full-time audio and video recordings will be stored, all in the blink of an eye.

With two intelligence agency-connected tech behemoths like Google and Microsoft investing so vigorously, a "smart" future appears to be on the way. And as government is now openly embracing a Minority Report-like future of pre-crime high-tech surveillance systems with their help, combined with a stated mission to intercept conversations and track Internet activity in real time, we should probably ask ourselves how much we really want to contribute to that endeavor by purchasing full-spectrum surveillance applications.

When: Saturday, Nov. 24 between Black Friday and Cyber Monday

Where: More than 500,000 small-business owners promote the event and offer discounts, special activities and displays; more than 100 million people are expected to shop at participating small firms.

World of Wigs in Santa will have an open house with door prizes and hourly flash sales.

Laguna Beach Books is offering 50 percent off selected art books.

The OC Mart Mix of 25 retail vendors in Costa Mesa has planned live music, a Santa booth and photographer, specialty holiday drinks and sales at many vendors.

These Orange County businesses are just a sampling of offerings that shoppers will find on Small Business Saturday.

Deliberately sandwiched between the Black Friday extravaganza at major retailers and the Cyber Monday online shopping promotions, Small Business Saturday seeks to grab some early holiday shopping dollars for local, independently owned businesses.

"Small Business Saturday is about Main Street, not Wall Street," said John Kabateck, executive director of National Federation of Independent Business California. "It's about the entrepreneurs and families who have put everything into stores that offer what chains and e-commerce companies don't: Something different, something special, from handcrafted gifts to genuinely friendly service. It's also about supporting the local economy."

American Express started promoting Small Business Saturday in 2010 to encourage shoppers to support local merchants. That was an outgrowth of a program called 3/50 Project that asked Americans to identify three local businesses they couldn't do without and spend at least $50 at those companies. Now Small Business Saturday is separate and grows bigger each year.

Last year, American Express concentrated on making consumers aware of Small Business Saturday and estimates that 500,000 businesses and more than 103 million shoppers participated. This year, the credit card giant reached out to business organizations and shop owners urging them to offer something special for the event, said Patricia Norins, a retail expert who is working with American Express.

"Just under 50 percent say they will incorporate Small Business Saturday as part of their holiday strategy," Norins said.

To encourage participation, American Express has provided marketing materials that owners can download from ShopSmall.com, such as online banners and logos, 11-by-17-inch signs that FedEx Office will print for free, social media and email templates. Through 100 selected chambers of commerce nationwide, American Express is distributing hundreds of $25 American Express gift cards, welcome mats, shopping bags and balloons

The Fullerton Chamber of Commerce is one of the selected groups, said President and CEO Teresa Harvey. "We have participated in Small Business Saturday in the past but not to this extent. We're involved because we see the importance of small business to the local economy. When people shop locally, the money says in the local community."

Kabateck added, "Small businesses are usually owned by people who have a vested interest in the community, in its schools, in the quality of life. It's no accident that small-business owners are among the most generous supporters of civic groups, local charities, youth sports and schools."

Because of the chamber's coordination, 44 Fullerton businesses are stepping up with their own unique offers. Capri Shoes is offering 15 percent off non-custom shoes and 30 percent off selected items. Road Kill Ranch will provide free gift wrapping for purchases over $100 and Ace Hardware is giving a 20 percent discount, Harvey said.

In addition to the champagne reception, Lolo Boutique is opening an hour early at 10 a.m. and will stay open as long as the store has customers, said owner Susan Upton. The boutique is introducing a new product line, My Flat in London, which has a drawing for a free trip to London. "Partnering with the chamber makes it so much easier; united we have a bigger footprint," Upton said.

Lori Curtin at Toy Boat is featured in an American Express commercial promoting Small Business Saturday, but she said she couldn't get her local chamber or neighboring merchants to band together for Small Business Saturday. "I've been telling our customers to go online to register their American Express card to be eligible for drawing for free gift cards. We have signs in the store, and we plan to make it as festive and fun as possible. We need all the help we can get."

At OC Mart Mix, many of the retailers are adding their own specials to the activities planned by the center, said spokeswoman Allison Olmstead. For example, Deer Lovely, a women's clothing boutique, and Whiskey Tango 1977, a companion men's store, are offering 20 percent discounts on most merchandise from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. Analog music shop is offering 50 percent off all day and a free vinyl record with a $50 purchase. Stoned Jewelry will mark everything down 15 percent. Milk & Honey Baby boutique is extending its 20 percent discounts through Sunday.

"There are no parameters for participating in Small Business Saturday," Norins said. "Each customer and business is different."

The finest pupil Willy ever taught, was his second son, Roy Wetzel. The Wetzels all had their battle scars, some more visible than others. When Roy returned from Viet Nam with a Purple Heart, he hoped for a peaceful life at home. Instead Roy found himself in a fight with his father. One fateful night, their strained relationship finally came to a head. As Roy's young daughter lay asleep in the next room, a weapon-filled brutal fight between father and son ensued. The aftermath of Willy's last skirmish would leave Roy bloody and beaten and charged by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania with Murder. This led to a controversial trial and the original court transcripts contained in the second half of this non-fiction novel give a compelling account of the prolonged legal contest that stirred up many debates. Following the lives of the Wetzels in intricate detail, In Self Defense will keep you turning the page till the very end.
