Physically fit boys and girls scored higher on reading and math, research reveals

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Having a healthy heart and lungs may be one of the most important factors for middle school students to make good grades in math and reading, according to findings presented at the American Psychological Association's 120th Annual Convention.

"Cardiorespiratory fitness was the only factor that we consistently found to have an impact on both boys' and girls' grades on reading and math tests," said study co-author Trent A. Petrie, PhD, professor of psychology and director of the Center for Sport Psychology at the University of North Texas. "This provides more evidence that schools need to re-examine any policies that have limited students' involvement in physical education classes."

The researchers gathered data at five Texas middle schools from 1,211 students, of whom 54 percent were female with an average age of about 12. Overall, the group was 57 percent white. Among the boys, the breakdown was 57.2 percent white, 24.2 percent Mexican-American, 9.1 percent African American, 1.1 percent Asian-American and 1.2 percent American Indian. For the girls, 58.6 percent were white, 23.4 percent were Mexican-American, 9.2 percent were African-American, 2.3 percent Asian-American and 0.6 percent were American Indian.

While previous studies have found links between being physically fit and improved academic performance, this study also examined several other potential influences, including self-esteem and social support. It also took into account the students' socioeconomic status and their self-reported academic ability, Petrie said.

In addition to cardiorespiratory fitness, social support was related to better reading scores among boys, according to the study. It defined social support as reliable help from family and friends to solve problems or deal with emotions. For girls, having a larger body mass index was the only factor other than cardiorespiratory fitness that predicted better reading scores. For boys and girls, cardiorespiratory fitness was the only factor related to their performance on the math tests. "The finding that a larger body mass index for girls was related to better performance on the reading exam may seem counterintuitive, however past studies have found being overweight was not as important for understanding boys and girls performances on tests as was their level of physical fitness," Petrie said.

From one to five months before the students were to take annual standardized reading and math tests, they answered questions about their level of physical activity, and how they viewed their academic ability, self-esteem and social support. The school district provided information on the students' socioeconomic status and reading and math scores at the end of the year.

To determine students' physical fitness, the researchers worked with physical education teachers to administer a fitness assessment program widely used in U.S. schools. The program includes a variety of tests to assess aerobic capacity, muscular strength, muscular endurance, flexibility and body composition. The assessment provides an objective measure of cardiorespiratory fitness through the Progressive Aerobic Cardiovascular Endurance Run, or PACER, and body composition through measuring BMI, the study said.

"Because this is a longitudinal study, these variables can now be considered risk factors in relation to middle school students' performance on math and reading examinations," Petrie said. "And that is essential to developing effective programs to support academic success."

RadioWatch: How software-defined radio could revolutionize wireless

The Phi hopes to do for radio what Apple I did for computing?spark innovation

In 1976, two shaggy-haired college dropouts founded a company called Apple to manufacture personal computers. The company's prospects looked so poor that the third co-founder relinquished his 10 percent stake in the company for $800 that same year. It simply wasn't clear why anyone would want the firm's Apple I computer. It was so under-powered that it couldn't perform many of the functions of mainframes and minicomputers that were already on the market. And most consumers had no interest in having a computer in their homes.

Today, of course, Apple is the world's largest company by market capitalization. What was important about the Apple I wasn't the meager capabilities of the original version, but the promise it held for rapid innovation in the coming decades.

Now, a company called Per Vices hopes to do for wireless communication what Apple did for computing. It is selling software-defined radio gear called the Phi that, like the Apple I, is likely to be of little interest to the average consumer (it was even briefly priced at the same point as the Apple I, $666.66, but has since been placed at $750).?But the device, and others like it, has the potential to transform the wireless industry. This time, the revolution will depend on hackers enabled to manipulate radio signals in software.

The versatility of software-defined radio

Traditional radio chips are hard-wired to communicate using one specific protocol. For example, a typical cell phone has several different chips to handle a variety of radio communications: one to talk to cell phone towers, another to contact WiFi base stations, a third to receive GPS signals, and a fourth to communicate with Bluetooth devices. In contrast, software-defined radio hardware works with raw electromagnetic signals, relying on software to implement specific applications.

This makes software-defined radio devices tremendously versatile. With the right software, a single software-defined radio chip could perform the functions of all of those special-purpose radio chips in your cell phone and many others besides. It could record FM radio and digital television signals, read RFID chips, track ship locations, or do radio astronomy. In principle it could perform all of these functions simultaneously. Software-defined radio hardware also enables rapid prototyping of new communications protocols.

Save Some Energy With Roller Blinds ? Guru Article Directory

Oftentimes, bare window glasses don?t have ventilation that is efficient. That is reason enough for the occupants of homes are in such a hurry to cover their bare windows in the summertime when the weather becomes much hotter. Usually, these occupants will cover their bare windows with some kind of a window shading product. Preventing the hot rays from the sun from passing through the window glass and therefore making the temperature inside the room in the home unbearably hot is one very important reason that people will use roller blinds.

Another important reason that some people want to cover their glass windows with roller blinds is that they want to be safe from the harmful effects of ultraviolet rays. The continued exposure to solar ultraviolet rays can cause premature discoloration of furniture and some skin diseases in humans.

The occupants of homes can frequently resolve this problem with extra equipment for ventilation such as air conditioners. However, there is a more ecologically sound and more practical method to deal with this problem. These days, manufacturers are continually improving the designs of their conventional products for window shading, especially roller blinds, in order to improve performance.

Therefore, people can now have energy efficient and ultraviolet filtering roller blinds for use on their glass windows. Energy efficient and ultraviolet protective roller blinds will help to control how much energy that exits and enters a room and vice versa. Also, the window roller blinds of today coated with transparent metal films that will permit people to control how much heat will enter the room and still time enjoy the view outside.

There are two kinds of window roller blinds which are horizontal and vertical window blinds. These window shadow products are better than using any other kind of treatment for windows because they are adjustable. The occupants of a home can adjust roller blinds when there isn?t much heat being felt to accommodate some sunshine. The occupants of a home can also adjust the roller blinds in order for them to be able to see the outside view. In addition, people can select operating systems that are electrically or manually powered.

Window roller blinds can help people save energy with their metal coated and reflective films. Additionally, roller blinds can control the heat in a room without spending on some extra equipment that is powered by electricity like electric fans or air conditioners. People can certainly reduce their need for electricity with energy efficient window roller blinds.

IFB's Blogger Name Generator is Trademarks 101 ? Thread Conscious

Dear Fashionistas,

Recently, the Independent Fashion Bloggers website published an awesome article titled ?The Blogger Name Generator: 9 Easy Ways to Name Your Blog.?? A blog?s name could be its bread and butter, as far as intellectual property is concerned.? Who in the fashion blogging world hasn?t heard of The Sartorialist or Bryan Boy?

The name of a blog may also serve as as trademark, so it?s important to choose wisely.? Read on for a brief overview of U.S. trademark law as it pertains to blog names, and be sure to check out my Legal Disclaimer as well.

As noted by the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), ?A trademark or service mark includes any word, name, symbol, device, or any combination, used or intended to be used to identify and distinguish the goods/services of one seller or provider from those of others, and to indicate the source of the goods/services.?

In other words, a trademark tells a customer exactly what he or she is getting and what company makes the product.? For example, when you see ?Louis Vuitton,? you know that company sells high-end luxury leather goods.? When you see ?The Man Repeller,? you know you?re visiting a blog with hilarious content cleverly mixed with haute couture.? ?Dom Perignon??? Champagne.? ?Christie?s??? Auctions.? ?Tiffany?s??? Jewelry.? As for the Blogger Name Generator, what IFB has done in essence, is highlight a cornerstone of U.S. trademark law called the Spectrum of Distinctiveness.

In a nutshell, the Spectrum of Distinctiveness is a measure of trademark strength- the more distinctive a trademark, the stronger it is and more legal protection it receives.? The Spectrum is simple, but super important.? Here?s a quick break down:

There are five levels of distinctiveness, the top level (fanciful) being the strongest (i.e. lots of protection).? As you go down the spectrum, distinctiveness, strength and protection decrease.? Marks that qualify as fanciful, arbitrary or suggestive are stronger than descriptive marks, and generic marks generally are not afforded legal protection.? So it?s a good idea to try to come up with a blog name that would fit into the top three categories!

Fanciful Marks: These are trademarks that consist of totally made up words and are inherently distinctive.? They are extremely unique so there?s not much chance any other business will have the same name.? Therefore, there?s not much chance for customers to confuse this business with another business.? Remember, the main point of trademarks is to prevent customer confusion. Example: ?Zoosk,? for a dating website.

Arbitrary Marks: These are trademarks that don?t have much context or connection to the goods or services that are offered for sale.? Example: ?Apple? for computers or ?Starbucks? for coffee.

Suggestive Marks: These trademarks cleverly suggest to customers what the goods or services offered might be.? Example: ?Twitter? for an online social network or ?Bag Borrow or Steal? for an online boutique that rents purses.

Descriptive Marks: These merely describe the goods or services offered.? Because there?s a greater chance that other businesses selling the same type of product could use the same or similar mark, there?s a greater chance that customers could be confused as to which company is offering the goods.? As such, these marks are incredibly weak and not afforded legal protection until they gain secondary meaning, which is a fancy way of saying they become extremely well-known by the public.? Hypothetical Example: ?Chewy? for chewing gum.

Generic Marks: These are words that generally cannot serve as trademarks because they do not identify the source (the company) of the goods or services to the public.? Example: Aspirin used to be a trademark until the public started using the word to identify many types of pain medications.? It became generic because it stopped identifying the source of the goods.? If someone asks for an aspirin, they may be referring to Bayer, Ibuprofen or Advil.

The majority of the name suggestions from the Blogger Name Generator appear to fall within the category of suggestive marks, which is pretty good.? However, I would be hesitant to use a trademarked word or brand within my own blog name, such as ?Chanelista? or ?Diorista,? as suggested in list number three of the IFB article.? Sure, they look like made up words and may seem to be arbitrary at first.? But the whole point here is to be creative and distinguish your brand or company from other companies, so why give the possible competition a shout out in your blog name!

Some of my favorite blog names mentioned in the article were Fashion Sushi and Lipstick and Lemon Drops.? Really clever and cute, these may also qualify as suggestive marks.? For more information about U.S. trademark law, you can check out the USPTO?s website which even includes helpful videos.? Also, please note that this article is not legal advice and only meant for general educational purposes.? I hope you found this particular post informative, and good luck choosing a blog name!

Fashionably Yours,

Nik

Many auto firms sell products for no profit | SaigonMoney.com - The ...

Many auto firms are applying non-profit sale mode to maintain production and reduce inventory, said Laurent Charpentier, chairman of the Vietnam Automobile Manufacturers Association (VAMA).

The written reply of the Ministry of Transport saying it would need a couple of years until the scheme on personal vehicle restriction fee comes into practice has sparked a ray of hope for the auto market. Local media, social organizations and many auto forums agree that the scheme should undergo more consultations before it could go ahead.

In just a few weeks after the reply was given, it is unclear whether auto sales have picked up or not since most traders and importers do not post their sales figures, said Charpentier, who is also managing director of Ford Vietnam.

He forecast Ford Vietnam?s sales would inch up in the third quarter against the second quarter and increase further in the last quarter.

He proposed the Government should further boost economic growth and stimulate the market in the rest of the year by injecting money into the economy after the GDP growth had slowed down sharply year-on-year in the first six months.

The fact that lending rates are going down will offer more chances for consumers and enterprises to access credit capital, Charpentier told the Daily. Vietnamese people still has demand for cars, he stressed, and automakers are launching new products to serve the peak season at year-end.

He said Ford Vietnam had launched many promotion programs since the year?s beginning, yet its sales performance did not improve much. The auto firm has to prolong its promotion programs and offer car buyers more supports.

Moreover, the company has been selling its products for no profit over the past few months. Many auto traders are doing the same in order to maintain production and tackle rising inventory, said the VAMA chairman.

?Car prices are very good now and can hardly drop further,? he added.

Though there are no official statistics, Charpentier said auto firms were now suffering from high volumes of unsold products. Several auto producers have reduced production and cut down on labor.

Charpentier predicted consumption of locally-assembled and imported vehicles would reach 90,000-95,000, versus the initial forecast of 85,000 units due to the unfavorable signals.

But not only is it enjoyable, it can also be extremely productive and beneficial to you as a homeowner. In fact, adding a garden to your home can add a surprising amount of worth to your home, becoming a selling item and a point of interest within your house. It?s not a small project, but it?s an investment of time and money that?s well worth making.

Getting the Money You Need

A garden isn?t something you can do completely for free though. It?s certainly not one of the most expensive home improvement projects at all, but it does come with a certain cost. You have to invest in the fertilizers, the seeds, the tools, the plants, the additives, and much more. You might need to buy instructional materials and even lessons, if you really want to get into the art of gardening and develop it as a skill. No matter what you decide to do, there will be some sort of cost.

And to pay for those costs, there?s no better option than open door loans. Open door loans are an option for borrowing money that anyone can get, ideally suited for the needs of people trying to do home improvements. You can apply for one during the night and have it approved and in your bank account by the morning.

You don?t need any references, a very good credit history, any securities, or even any money in your bank account to get an open door loan. According to www.opendoorloan.co.uk all you need is proof of employment and a good lender, and if you?re over 18 you could easily get the loan within a few hours. It?s the perfect way to get a head start on your gardening projects before payday rolls around, and to finally stop procrastinating on the things you want to do. You can follow this link and read more information.

Why Gardening Is Worth It

There should be no question about whether or not having a garden makes your home more valuable. The beauty of a home garden is what will draw buyers and impress appraisers. Besides that, it?s important to have a project to work on within your home, and something as relaxing and fulfilling as gardening is ideal. Payday loans and open door loans can help you to afford the costs, and the time you invest will bring the garden to life.
