HTC brings 4-inch Desire P to Taiwan's budget Android set
HTC's One may take the world by storm if it ever gets around to selling it, but meanwhile the company has to pay the bills. It's been doing that very well lately with more budget-oriented models that it sells mostly in Asia, and it looks to continue in that vein with the Taiwan-bound Desire P. It's a 4.3-inch WVGA device with unspecified Android and Sense versions, dual 1Ghz CPUs, 768MB RAM, 4GB storage, a microSD expansion slot, Beats audio and an 8-megapixel rear camera. It'll be up for grabs in "pretty" red or "sparkling" white exclusively at Taiwan's Chunghwa Telecom for a rather steep sounding $360 or so -- whether the market will bear that considering the glut of similar phones remains to be seen.

PST: Henry's work of art leads Bulls past Union
No question that Mike Petke (pictured) preferred not to wait five matches for his initial win as the New York Red Bulls manager. It must be like getting your first new car ? but being told it will take six weeks to ship.
Either way, New York?s slightly concerning start in 2013 can be dismissed, apparently. The Red Bulls, playing well but unable to pop the top on a sweet victory soda before Saturday, got Petke and themselves a 2-1 win against Philadelphia.
It took something special from Thierry Henry, whose wonderful game-winner was a technical work of art. Truly, Henry doesn?t just score goals, he still scores magnificent ones.
Two things should not be lost in the instinct and expertise of Henry?s awesome, 81st minute two-touch wonder:
Debuting newcomer P?guy Luyindula supplied a swell ball from just beyond the penalty area, giving Henry just enough to work with. The French midfielder, who made 130 appearances over five years at Paris Saint-Germain, already looks like a terrific find for the Red Bulls. His intelligent work off the ball matches the good work with it.
And RBNY midfielder Dax McCarty, who continues to hold his place among Major League Soccer?s most underrated brigade, scored a goal that was every bit as important as Henry?s. McCarty?s goal may not have contained the same aesthetic, but it represented the very height of useful opportunism. It was all about awareness and optimism, mixed with enough craftsmanship to finish the job.
McCarty made something from very little, a critical second-half scoring opener for his club, which was having some issues scoring goals at home before that one.

Researchers find immunity protein that ramps up inflammation, and agents that can block it
Mar. 31, 2013 ? Scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine have discovered a new biological pathway of innate immunity that ramps up inflammation and then identified agents that can block it, leading to increased survival and improved lung function in animal models of pneumonia.
They reported their findings today in Nature Immunology.
Pneumonia and other infections sometimes provoke an inflammatory response from the body that is more detrimental than the disease-causing bacteria, said senior author Rama Mallampalli, M.D, professor and vice chair for research, Department of Medicine, and director of the Acute Lung Injury Center of Excellence at Pitt.
"In our ongoing studies of pneumonia, we found infecting bacteria activate a previously unknown protein called Fbxo3 to form a complex that degrades another protein called Fbxl2, which is needed to suppress the inflammatory response," said Dr. Mallampalli, who is also chief of the pulmonary division of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System. "The result is an exaggerated inflammatory response that can lead to further damage of the lung tissue, multi-organ failure and shock."
The research team, led by Bill B. Chen, Ph.D., associate professor, Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, conducted experiments in which mice that lacked the ability to make Fbxo3 were infected with a strain of Pseudomonas bacteria, and found that they had better lung mechanics and longer survival than mice that still made the protein.
Research team members Bryan J. McVerry, M.D., and Yingze Zhang, Ph.D., both of the Acute Lung Injury Center of Excellence, found that blood samples from 16 people who had sepsis, a condition of systemic inflammation, revealed higher levels of Fbxo3 and other inflammatory proteins and lower levels of Fbxl2 than samples from seven patients who did not have sepsis or lung infection.
Based on the structure of Fbxo3, the researchers developed a family of small molecules with the aim of inhibiting its activity. Administration of one of them, called BC-1215, led to reduced inflammatory markers and improved lung mechanics in mouse models of pneumonia and sepsis.
"The key is to find ways to help the body temper its inflammatory response so that it's able to kill the infectious agent without causing injury to healthy tissue," Dr. Mallampalli said.
"The F-box protein Fbxo3, and other related proteins, represent ideal targets for treatment of acute lung injury, because it controls the innate immune response, is upstream of important inflammatory signaling pathways, and is more selective than traditional drugs that regulate protein turnover," noted Mark T. Gladwin, M.D., chief of the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy and Critical Care Medicine, Pitt School of Medicine.
The team is beginning to study the effects of BC-125 on other conditions of systemic inflammation, such as colitis and arthritis.
Co-authors of the paper include Tiffany A. Coon, Jennifer R. Glasser, Jing Zhao, Ph.D., Yutong Zhao, M.D, Ph.D., Chunbin Zou, Ph.D, Bryon Ellis, and Frank C. Sciurba, M.D., all of the Acute Lung Injury Center of Excellence, University of Pittsburgh.

First commercial flight between Egypt and Iran for 34 years
CAIRO (Reuters) - The first commercial flight between Egypt and Iran in 34 years took off on Saturday, the latest step towards normalizing ties broken following the 1979 Iranian Islamic revolution.
Egypt and Iran agreed to resume direct flights in October 2010 before President Hosni Mubarak was ousted from power, but no flights were made.
"A flight by Air Memphis, owned by Egyptian businessman Rami Lakah, took off from Cairo to Tehran earlier on Saturday carrying eight Iranians including diplomats," one airport official said adding that the airline could later carry out more tourist and business trips between Egypt and Iran.
Diplomatic relations between Iran and Egypt were cut in the aftermath of the 1979 Islamic revolution in Tehran when the government in Cairo gave sanctuary to the deposed shah.
But ties improved over the years, and have become significantly better since the election of Islamist Mohamed Mursi as president of Egypt in June 2012.
Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad visited Egypt in February, the first visit by an Iranian leader to Cairo in more than three decades, and called for a strategic alliance with Egypt and offered a loan to the cash-strapped Arab state.
Mursi visited Iran in August to attend an international summit where he initiated a quartet committee that included Egypt, Turkey, Iran and Saudi Arabia to discuss ways to end the Syrian civil war. Saudi Arabia later left the group.
