But a careful and lengthy examination of its structural stability, carried out by Italian geologists, provided a damning verdict: the Colosseum is in fact slanting on one side by 16 inches, and might need urgent repairs before it starts leaning like the Tower of Pisa. ?

Researchers at Rome's La Sapienza University and the environmental geology institute IGAG first noticed the anomaly one year ago. They now fear there may be a crack in the base below the amphitheater.

"The slab of concrete on which the Colosseum rests, which is like a 13 meter (42 foot) thick oval doughnut, may have a fracture inside it," Giorgio Monti, from La Sapienza's construction technology department, told Italy?s daily newspaper Corriere della Sera.?

My Monday mornings followed a strict routine last spring. I woke up with the sun, scarfed an energy bar, and took the Broad Street Line to North Philadelphia. My destination was an uncomfortably small room on a university campus. Crammed next to a dozen other students, I sat for three hours and listened to a short, tan man with tall, white hair lecture on the works of Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Hegel. His class was titled ?On the Sublime.?

A college campus surrounded by urban blight seemed like an unlikely, even irreverent, location to rehearse theories of sublimity. After all, what good are treatises on elevated experience and beauty when the immediate world is full of dread and decay? I felt uneasy parsing the difference between ?agreeable? and ?good? when neither word seemed applicable to my friends and family living under the shadow of ever-increasing debt. I was beginning to feel the anxiety that comes from entering an academic discipline detached from real-world concerns.

Fortunately, my graduate student responsibilities included teaching a writing course immediately following my early morning class. The existential angst I experienced while discussing dead white men was attenuated by young people who were alive in every sense of the word. They spoke in tones that conveyed both enthusiasm and conviction. Their ideas were fluid enough that they could cover highbrow theory and popular culture within the same breath.

My students made a habit of speaking words that were on the tip of my tongue and our trains of thought often ran parallel. But class conversation occasionally took intellectual detours that I could not anticipate. My students offered electrifying ideas that never occurred to me during my lesson preparation. These moments were, if my former professor can excuse my loose use of the word, sublime.

The clearest example I have of this student-directed learning came at the height of my academic distress. Our class discussion began as a critique of films that portray teachers as zealous missionaries, but quickly dovetailed into an inquiry about the nature of education itself. I asked my students the question that had been at the forefront of my mind for several months: what is the purpose of education?

The expected responses came first. One student asserted that the primary goal of education is to ?help students get jobs.? Another seemed to complete that thought by explaining how college leads to professional connections. One after another, student comments confirmed my fear that the educational system merely churns out young workers as a Detroit factory produces cars. To them, learning was a means to a material end. I was starting to become disheartened by our conversation until a young man in the back of the class raised his hand:

?Education is determining what?s important.?

I was stunned by this pithy reply. The 18-year old sage explained that daily life offers so many perspectives and so much information that the ultimate goal of education is to separate the meaningful nuggets of data from the detritus. He described education as a growth process.

This sentiment was familiar to me. Like many of my students, my original goal was to pursue a job that brought fame and fortune. Exposure to literature and philosophy changed these priorities. I decided that questions about love and aesthetics matter, especially during times of economic and social upheaval. I reasoned that even if humanity finds a cure for every known illness and develops an economic system that satisfies everyone, the big questions about life, love, and happiness will remain unresolved. My education became focused on the value of the humanities.

My student set off a maelstrom in my head. Yes, contemporary culture is full of howls and headlines heralding economic and ecological disaster. But the best way to combat these crises is to cultivate diverse disciplines where people are free to define and pursue meaning. The world?s woes are as complicated as its people. We need mindfulness from David Foster Wallace as much as we need macroeconomics from John Maynard Keynes.

Meaning is determined by careful consideration and reflection, not public consensus. A young man reminded me of this lesson. With his insight in mind, I tell my students to be fearless and to embrace the diversity of human experience. I encourage them to take classes outside of their intended academic path and discover where their true passions lie. I remind my students that the world and its problems are miniscule compared to the power of human reason and imagination. Kant may have popularized that last claim, but my students are the ones that convinced me it is true.

To mark the Olympic Flame passing through Camberwell, UAL PhD artists and associates, present an exhibition that considers fire in its ceremonial, ritualistic, metaphysical and symbolic aspects; as well as its physical, audio-visual and scientific representations. An artists? residency relay will pass the torch of audience encounter across the three weeks; as practitioners work in the galleries, alongside the exhibits.

In the context of the riots during 2010 and the fatal Lakanal House fire in Camberwell 2009, flames may raise mixed associations locally. This year?s Olympic flame lit in Greece on May 10th 2012, where protestors in Athens clash with police over austerity measures, arrives in Camberwell in July on the way to the Olympic Cauldron in East London, where tens of billions of pounds have been spent.

Despite austerity, there is the human resolve to celebrate. Fires and flames have roles to play in both. Art on Fire aims to give depth and breadth to our encounter with this symbol, brought to our attention by The Games, as it is run through the streets.

Charities help pets when foreclosure victims can't

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Carla Waller believes in promises. She was married for 37 years, held one job for 35 and never adopted a pet she didn't keep for life. Until now.

Waller and her husband Dennis moved to Las Vegas in 2006 and put $100,000 down on a $330,000 home. They adopted Jake, a 3-year-old, lean, shy Cocker spaniel. They both sold furniture on commission and thought they were set for retirement and beyond.

Dennis was diagnosed with terminal cancer in 2008 and died in 2009. Carla stayed home to care for him, but returned to work to make ends meet. She adopted Marilyn Monroe, a schnauzer-collie, to keep Jake company. A friend added Jewels the cat to the mix.

The recession stripped her home of a third of its value. Then health problems left her unable to work.

Foreclosure is just around the corner, said Waller, 67. "I know I'm a couple of months out. I can't do it anymore. I don't have the income," she said. "I'm done. There is nothing I can do now."

The hardest call she had to make was to Foreclosed Upon Pets, Inc., to arrange for homes for Jake, Marilyn and Jewels so she can move in with relatives.

"I am very depressed about it and very concerned about where they go because I took them for life and life is not what it should be," she said.

Waller's story is all too familiar to Everett Croxson, who founded Las Vegas-based FUPI (rhymes with puppy) in 2008.

Croxson, 59, a retired business consultant, was guided by hometown headlines.

? Nevada had the worst foreclosure rate nationally for 62 months until March.

? Nevada has the highest unemployment rate in the nation at 11.6 percent.

? The Animal Foundation in Las Vegas runs the highest volume single-facility shelter in the country. It takes in close to 50,000 animals a year. Nearly two-thirds have to be euthanized.

In 2009, Croxson bought a five-bedroom home to use as a transition house for the pets. FUPI placed 348 pets that year.

In 2010, it was nearly 500; in 2011, 570; and this year it will be more than 600, Croxson said.

FUPI also works with the unemployed and those too ill or old to handle their pets, but about 30 percent of their pets are foreclosures, Croxson said.

"Real estate agents or cleaning crews call all the time. Maybe they have found a couple of cats in a closet of a foreclosed home," he said.

In Arizona, which bumped Nevada from the top of the foreclosure rankings in March, the Lost Our Home Pet Foundation in Phoenix does similar work. Founded in 2008, it also relies primarily on fosters although it did open a small shelter in April.

There are about 40 animals in the shelter and 220 in foster care. More than 2,000 have been placed in four years, said founder-executive director Jodi Polanski.

As a mortgage loan officer, Polanski heard story after story, so she started the rescue in her spare time. There was too much work, so she became full-time director and now she and two employees work with 120 volunteers and fosters.

Lost Our Home runs a food bank and a temporary care program for dogs belonging to homeless entering shelters. The dogs are kept for 90 days so owners can get back on their feet.

In Arizona's Maricopa County, foreclosed homeowners have turned into renters. "Landlords can be pickier and not allow pets or they can require large pet deposits," Polanski said, forcing people to give up some or all of their animals. The problem will exist until people can qualify for home loans again, she said.

"The economy is looking better in a lot of places, but it's not better for the animals right now," Polanski added.

There is no charge to a person relinquishing an animal, but adopters pay $150 per animal at FUPI, $75 for cats and $195 for dogs at Lost Our Home. A vet's exam, sterilization, shots and a microchip are included.

Polanski said the worst part of her job is turning pets away. "We do have limitations. We have a waiting list. It breaks our hearts every day when there are pets we can't help," she said.

A few weeks ago, FUPI rescued two Shih Tzus from an elderly woman who was being transferred to a home for dementia patients. Their fur was so matted with feces, dirt and food, they had to be shaved.

"She loved her dogs, she just didn't know the state they were in," Croxson said.

In addition to its own placements, FUPI sends between eight and 14 Animal Foundation dogs to Canada each week, where a pet store chain houses and places them.

"It's absolutely helpful to our organization to have rescues like FUPI," said Carly Scholten, Animal Foundation's director of operations.

In addition to a website and weekly adoption events, Croxson is taking part in county meetings designed to find ways to place more animals, and he does a weekly radio show to recruit volunteers and talk about pets.

For Croxson, the worst part of helping is the loss, guilt and remorse he sees when owners say goodbye to their pets.

He works hard to find homes he believes would please them.

Waller told him Jake needs someone by his side, day and night. "He's an old person's dog, though he's great with kids. His favorite thing to do is lie at your side."

No matter what, she said, "I hope my puppies are loved as much as I love them."

The world's largest hamburger chain has thrived in boom and bust times by selling cheap eats and constantly updating its menu with popular items such as fruit smoothies and snack wraps. But the company is starting to show signs of wear and tear from global economic pressures, intensifying competition and penny-pinching customers who are eating out less often in some hard-hit regions around the world.

The Oak Brook, Ill.-based company said Monday that its net income fell 4 percent in the second quarter as a strong dollar ate into results.

When the dollar is strong, international sales translate into fewer dollars back at home. That's problematic for McDonald's, which does two-thirds of its business overseas. Making matters worse, the dollar hit a two-year high against the euro Monday amid ongoing fears that Spain may need a government bailout.

McDonald's is also facing higher costs for labor and ingredients, although it said it now expects commodity costs to rise between 3.5 percent and 4.5 percent for the full year, down from the previous forecast of up to 5.5 percent.

Suggesting more challenges ahead, McDonald's said global sales at restaurants open at least a year rose 3.7 percent for the three months ended June 30. The figure, which is a key metric because it strips out the impact of newly opened and closed locations, represents the slowest growth since the company reported sales growth of 2.3 percent in the fourth-quarter of 2009.

"We've been in situations like this before," CEO Don Thompson said in a conference call with investors, noting that the company will draw on its past experiences in the past to navigate the current challenges.

In a note to investors, Janney analyst Mark Kalinowski pointed out that the company was nevertheless able to deliver relatively strong overall growth at a time of economic uncertainty as a result of "best-in-class" execution.

McDonald's has exceeded expectations in recent years, in large part by emphasizing value and continually evolving its menu to keep up with changing tastes. Some of its most successful new offerings in recent years ? such as snack wraps and specialty coffees ? give customers a way to treat themselves for just a few bucks. They also happen to have high profit margins.

Kalinowski said he thinks that McDonald's will continue to grab market share. He maintained his "buy" rating on the stock.

Still, other analysts have noted that McDonald's growth has slowed in recent times, which could reflect stiffer competition from newer chains like Panera Bread Co., which offers higher-end food in a fast casual atmosphere. Long-time rivals such as Wendy's Inc. and Burger King Worldwide Inc. are also reworking their menus, renovating restaurants and launching new ad campaigns to win back customers.

In the U.S., McDonald's said sales rose 3.6 percent in the quarter, with increased traffic contributing to growth.

In Europe, where McDonald's does 40 percent of its business, the company said customer traffic was down in several economically hard-hit regions. But the company said that it's faring better than its competitors and, overall, sales rose 3.8 percent.

In the region that includes Asia Pacific, the Middle East and Africa ? where McDonald's is looking to expand its presence ? the figure edged up just 0.9 percent. Results from Australia and China offset weakness in Japan, where consumers are still reeling from last year's earthquake and tsunami and eating at home more often.

For the quarter, McDonald's says it earned $1.35 billion, or $1.32 per share. That's down from $1.4 billion, or $1.35 per share, in the year-ago period. McDonald's said unfavorable currency exchange rates hit its results by 7 cents per share.

In the third quarter, the company expects exchange rates to hurt results by 8 cents to 10 cents per share.

Total revenue for the quarter was $6.92 billion, up slightly from $6.91 billion a year ago. When stripping out the impact of exchange rates, the company said revenue rose 5 percent.

Analysts polled by FactSet on average expected $1.38 per share on revenue of $6.94 billion.

Shares of McDonald's, which has 33,000 locations around the world, fell $2.64, or almost 3 percent, to close at $88.94 Monday.
