Millions in stolen art recovered in LA area

Millions of dollars in contemporary art was recovered Wednesday after a tipster led Santa Monica police to an automotive electronics store in Pasadena and then to at least two residences, police said Thursday.

The art belongs to bond-fund manager Jeff Gundlach, whose Santa Monica home was burglarized earlier this month.

Most of the paintings were found during a search of Al & Ed?s Autosound located at 30 S. Rosemead Boulevard in Pasadena, according to Santa Monica police. The store?s manager, 45-year-old Jay Jeffrey, of Canyon Country, was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

Detectives were then led to a San Gabriel residence, where investigators found four of the stolen paintings. There, Wilmer Bolosan Cadiz, 40, was arrested on suspicion of possessing stolen property.

The last painting was found at a Glendale residence, police said. The person who had that painting has been interviewed by police and is cooperating with investigators.

Gundlach, the founder of DoubleLine Capital, said the recovery marked a "great day for the art world and all those who seek order and justice in our society."

"My gratitude goes out to Detective David Haro and the entire Santa Monica Police Department for their skillful, tireless and respectful attention to apprehending the criminals and recovering all of the artwork stolen," he said in a statement. "I would also like to thank the many well wishers who offered support and whose optimism over the last two weeks proved accurate."

On Monday, Gundlach offered $1.7 million for information leading to the successful return of the artwork undamaged. It was not immediately known who would receive the reward.

The bulk of the reward ? $1 million of it ? is dedicated solely to the safe return of ?Composition (A) En Rouge Et Blanc,? an oil-on-canvas piece by Piet Mondrian circa 1936. Another $500,000 is for a 1956 Jasper John?s collage titled ?Green Target.?

"If the people that turn in the tip were part of the burglary they will not receive a single penny," according to Gundlach. "However, if they were righteous people, they will receive every penny."

Still, not all of the stolen property has been recovered, police said.

Sometime between 3 p.m. on Sept. 12 and 8 p.m. on Sept. 14, burglars made off with loot estimated to be worth $10 million, including a 2012 Porsche Carrera 4S, wine and expensive watches, investigators said.

Gundlach returned to his home in the 500 block of 12th Street on Sept. 14 to find it?d been burglarized while he was away on a trip, investigators said.

Summer ends strong for Hawaii tourism economy

HONOLULU (AP) ? Hawaii's tourism economy ended the summer with double-digit increases in visitor arrivals and spending.

That's according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority's August statistics.

The authority said Thursday spending grew 14.6 percent last month compared to the previous year to $1.19 billion. August arrivals increased 11 percent.

Arrivals from the U.S. West grew almost 8 percent for the 10th consecutive month of growth.

Japanese arrivals increased nearly 13 percent last month, but remained lower than the August 1996 record. There was a 4 percent drop in daily spending, which resulted in a moderate, about 6 percent increase in total spending.

Canadian arrivals dropped 0.6 percent and spending decreased 1.4 percent.

Authority President and CEO Mike McCartney says upcoming festivals and events will help draw visitors during the slower fall travel period.

An employer must prove the RFOA defense after an employee has identified a specific policy or practice and established that it harmed older employees substantially more than younger ones.

A. 1. The extent to which the factor is related to the employer?s stated business purpose.

EU considers sanctions against Iranian banks, energy sector

BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European governments are considering a new round of sanctions against Iran over its nuclear programme that could be implemented in October and substantially curtail trade with the Islamic Republic and hit its banking industry, diplomats say.

The push comes at a time when tensions between Iran and Israel are rising, threatening to engulf the Middle East in a new war, and diplomatic efforts to resolve the decade-long dispute over Iran's nuclear work have foundered.

In response, governments in Europe and the United States are making a new push to persuade Tehran to scale back the enrichment of uranium, believed to be part of Tehran's programme to build a nuclear bomb. Iran denies any military intentions and says it seeks to increase energy supplies with nuclear power.

Foreign ministers of France, Germany and Britain asked their EU counterparts to agree on new measures by their next policy meeting on October 15, in a joint letter sent in recent days.

"We must let Iran know that we have not exhausted our options," Laurent Fabius, Guido Westerwelle and William Hague wrote in the letter, a copy of which was seen by Reuters.

The three ministers listed energy, finance, trade and transportation as the sectors to target.

European diplomats said several proposals for specific measures have circulated in Brussels in recent days, including moves to close loopholes in sanctions against the Iranian central bank agreed this year. No decisions have yet been taken.

More commercial banks could also be added to the lists of companies targeted by EU asset freezes, several diplomats said, without identifying any institutions. Sanctions imposed by Washington target roughly a dozen more banks than EU measures, which could be expanded to add these.

A number of shipping companies are also being considered as new sanction targets, diplomats said.

It was not clear if the European Union would target Iran's state-owned National Iranian Oil Company, one of the world's largest oil exporters, which the U.S. government officially linked to Tehran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps on Monday.

European governments have already taken major steps to put pressure on Iran, such as an oil embargo, to get it to comply with international demands that it abandon enrichment of uranium, believed to be part of programme to build nuclear weapons.

But experts say the current sanctions leave plenty of leeway for Iranian firms to operate in Europe, partly because European sanctions tend to pick specific targets rather than impose sweeping bans.

Transactions with the Iranian central bank, which settles most trade payments, are allowed if they are linked to legitimate trade, for example.

Targeting specific companies accused of financing Tehran's nuclear proliferation activities also means that firms can evade sanctions by spinning off new ones.

Britain is pushing for a ban on trade with Iran in any energy-related sector, which could help close such loopholes.

"The Iranians spin out new companies and the Europeans play catch-up. It would be more effective to have a blanket ban," said Mark Dubowitz, head of the non-profit Foundation for Defense of Democracies in the United States, which pushes for tough sanctions on Iran.

Diplomats said talks between the EU's 27 members are at a preliminary stage, meaning new proposals are expected. But discussions will likely be heated, with many capitals concerned about the impact of any new sanctions on economies battered by a three-year debt crisis.

"The debate should intensify in the coming week," one EU diplomat said. "There are various suggestions and nothing has been agreed."

Formatting eBooks?for Newbs ? Speaking to the Eyes

Last time, we spoke about the very basics of doing a book cover?today, another integral piece of the puzzle, formatting!

Before I got into e-publishing, I thought I knew what publishers wanted when you submit your manuscript. There are certain protocols you?re supposed to follow?name in the upper left corner, word count in the upper right, etc. The purpose of this is for the agent or publisher to have a quick reference, and for the editor to be able to easily get around your work. In e-publishing, though, the writer is filling most of those roles, so the game is completely different.

So why not just write the book in MS Word the way you want it to look, upload it to Kobo or Amazon, and press publish?

If you do that, I?ll guarantee you one thing: the end product will look horrible.

The thing is, a lot of the formatting in MS Word?or other word processors for that matter?is done in the background, where you can?t see it. Here?s an experiment: go to the View tab,

Formatting Marks: note there are even dots to indicate the space between words.

and find the option that shows your formatting marks. (In Word, go to Options, Display, and Show All Formatting Marks.) Your manuscript will be riddled with symbols; this is coding Word inputs into your file as you?re writing to determine what the output will look like. What many people don?t realize is that Word is not a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get program. Far from it!

Here?s another experiment. Copy a paragraph of your manuscript, open a blank file in Notepad, and paste it. The text should go, unbroken, on one line, and you?ll have to scroll to the right to see it all. This is because .txt files, unlike files from word processors, don?t have ?Word Wrap,? meaning that the text will go on forever until a new paragraph is started. Looks hard to read, right? Surely we want our manuscripts to ?wrap? when we format them for eBooks, right?

Actually, no. The thing is, there?s no standard for electronic books. Many?I?d even say most?go with the ePub format, while others?like the ubiquitous Amazon Kindle books?are .mobi files. There are several other formats; the point is, they?re all programmed differently. So when you upload a particular file to, say, Kobo, it might look vastly different when Amazon gets a hold of it. The difference comes in how those files interact with the formatting marks I mentioned earlier.

I haven?t experimented with every kind of file, so I can?t tell you yet which works best?what I can say is that, for the sake of your own sanity, the easiest thing to do is start with a raw file. I do a lot of my writing in MS Word through Google Docs?because it?s accessible anywhere, even on my phone?and copy and paste the text into Scrivener. Scrivener can output into several file types, including Real Text Format (rtf) or the MS Word .doc. Of, you can export it as a text file. This is the raw text?no formatting at all.

What I?ve been doing is exporting as a text file, then opening up a program called Sigil, a WYSIWYG editor (unlike Word!). Sigilis basically an HTML editor, meaning you?ll be coding in the same way you would a web page?or an eBook. It?s really simple to use, and you don?t need any experience with HTML. Just copy and paste your work, create headings (which will create a table of contents for you), and images if you have them, italicize and bold your text if need be. That?s it! There?s a handy tutorial here, and the whole process isn?t very long or arduous (though poetry is another story?it took a while to get Muzak for the Metro to look right).

It might even be simpler, though. I haven?t tried it yet, but I imagine you could output your Scrivener files as an eBook, which would open in Sigil. This way, you do most of your formatting as you work in Scrivener, and use Sigil for touch-ups.

Once that?s done, you use Calibre to tweak things like metadata and making sure everything is ?just so.? But that?s a topic for another post.

This is only the tip of the iceberg when it comes to eBook formatting, but it?s a start, and it?s a lot easier than some might lead you to believe. Suicide is the cause of more deaths than car crashes, according to an alarming new study.

The number of people who commit suicide in the U.S. has drastically increased while deaths from car accidents have dropped, making suicide the leading cause of injury death.

Suicides via falls or poisoning have risen significantly and experts fear that there could be many more unaccounted for, particularly in cases of overdose.

The results were compiled using National Center for Health Statistics data gathered from 2000 to 2009.

Researchers noted a 25 per cent decrease in fatal car accidents,?medicalxpress.com?reported, while deaths from falls rose 71 per cent, poisoning 128 per cent and from suicide 15 per cent.

Suicide is now the most frequent cause of injury deaths, followed by car crashes, poisoning, falls and murder.

The study also looked at gender and race, concluding that fewer women died from the four main causes than men.

Men especially are the hardest hit, because in a recession, they have a lot of anxiety about their provider role.

Middle-aged men from disadvantaged backgrounds are 10 times more likely to commit suicide, often because they have lost a sense of identity and masculine pride, researchers said on Thursday.

In a report commissioned by the British helpline charity the Samaritans, health experts explored why men in their 30s, 40s and 50s are at such a substantially higher risk of ending their own lives.

The findings suggest suicide is not simply a mental health problem, the researchers said, but also one of men?s place in societies and of societies? inability to adapt to men?s needs when trying to deal with depression, anxiety and other problems.

[...]?The changing nature of the labour market over the last 60 years has affected working class men,? it said. ?With the decline of traditional male industries, they have lost not only their jobs but also a source of masculine pride and identity.?

The World Health Organisation estimates that every year, almost a million people commit suicide ? a rate of 16 per 100,000, or one every 40 seconds. It also estimates that for every suicide, there are up to 20 attempted ones.

Men are more likely to commit suicide than women in almost every country in the world, and the WHO says the main risk factors are mental illness ? primarily depression ? and alcohol abuse, as well as violence, loss, abuse and pressures from cultural and social backgrounds.

The Samaritans study found that in Britain on average about 3,000 middle-aged men from disadvantaged backgrounds kill themselves each year.

I can?t speak for everyone, but it seems obvious to me that a lot of people, especially young people who have college debt and can?t find jobs, need to be asking themselves an important question: are you better off now than you were four years ago?

The home resale market put forth another strong data set last week. Home sales prices are higher nationwide and sales volume has moved to a 2-year high.

According to the National Association of REALTORS?, 4.82 million ?existing homes? sold on a seasonally-adjusted, annualized basis in August, representing a near 8 percent improvement from the month prior and a nine percent jump from August 2011.

An existing home is a home which has been previously occupied.

Home sales were unevenly split across price tiers, with more than half of all homes selling for less than $250,000. This suggests that the first-time home buyers and real estate investors continue to be active in today?s market as a foundation for growth is built.

According to the Existing Home Sales data :

• First-time buyers accounted for 31% of all home sales
• Real estate investors accounted for 18% of all home sales
• Other, repeat buyers accounted for 51% of all home sales

Also noteworthy is that ?distressed homes? accounted for the smallest percentage of overall home sales since the real estate trade group starting tracking such data.

In August, homes in various stages of foreclosures accounted for 12% of all sales and sold at an average discount of 19 percent below market value. Short sale homes accounted for 10% of all sales and sold at an average discount of 13 percent below market value.

Of all the data in the August Existing Home Sales report, though, perhaps most relevant to today?s buyers is the shrinking national housing supply.

At August?s end, there were 2.47 million homes listed for sale nationwide, a three percent increase from the month prior. However, because the pool of available home buyers is increasing more rapidly than the number of homes for sale, housing supplies fell 0.3 months to 6.1 months.

This means that at the current pace of sales, the entire housing supply would be sold by March 2013.

For today?s home buyers, home affordability appears poised to worsen. Mortgage rates and home prices remain low today, but market conditions like these rarely last long. Talk to your real estate agent about what options you have ahead of you. 2012 is coming to a close.

By 2013, the housing recovery may be fully underway.

Less than a month after she welcomed son Edward Duke via gestational surrogate, Giuliana Rancic reported for work Sept. 23 to host the E! network's Primetime Emmy Awards "Countdown to the Red Carpet" special.

Wearing an ivory Rafael Cennamo dress that matched co-hosts Kelly Osbourne (in Marcia Lucia Hohan) and George Kotsiopoulos (in Brooks Brothers), the new mom admitted it was hard getting back into the swing of things. "I've missed you so much," Rancic told her "Fashion Police" cohorts.

"It's so different not having you there," Osbourne said. "Not that we haven't had amazing guests, but I missed you so much."

During her maternity leave, Rancic tuned into the Joan Rivers-hosted show weekly. "I still acted like [a critic]," Rancic told Osbourne, 27, and Kotsiopoulos, 43. "Sometimes you cut me off and I get very offended!"

Rancic then shared several photos of her son, who was born in Colorado Aug. 29. "I always vowed I would never be one of those moms who brought pictures, but I'm one of those moms!" she laughed. "It's hard to believe he's almost a month old."

Rancic and Ryan Seacrest, 37, will co-host E!'s live red carpet pre-show beginning at 6 p.m. ET.
