Illini Coach Tim Beckman rips off Northwestern football slogan

tim-beckman

Illini college football coach Tim Beckman went on 670 The Score in Chicago today. Around 4:30 CDT with Boers and Bernstein. Tim Beckman appeared with Illinois Athletic Director Mike Thomas and college basketball coach John Groce. If and when WSCR posts the audio, I?ll link it here.

The Northwestern Twitterverse (there?s not many of them, but there are some) are blowing up about what Beckman did today.

He took a well known Northwestern slogan and ?borrowed it? as his own.

?Whatever is Necessary.? or ?W.I.N.? is the new slogan Tim Beckman will use to motivate/lead Illinois Fighting Illini football in 2013. Hmmmmm, now where have I heard that before?

Where?

Somewhere very very close?

I think?.

It?s another Big Ten coach.

It?s another guy who sometimes SPEAKS LOUDLY AT PRESS CONFERENCES and whose quotes I?ve sometimes had to write into my game stories in ALL CAPS DENOTING THE LOUDNESS.

Ah yes, that?s right- W.I.N. ?What?s Important Now? has been on the walls of the Northwestern football media/meeting room for many many years. So Tim Beckman, you just fired up your rival even more by blatantly taking their phrase. And the Land of Lincoln rivalry just added more bad blood six days ago. Pablo Picasso once said: ?good artists borrow, and great artists steal.?

So maybe Tim Beckman is painting some genuine masterpiece of the college gridiron and we can?t see it just yet. Maybe he lifted a slogan from Pat Fitzgerald because he remembers that Coach Fitz 51 beat him like 70-10 or whatever it was back in November.

So what Beckman did today looks either a.) completely oblivious to what?s going on around him or b.) a direct shot at trying to irritate his in-state rival.

I need to use the Tim Beckman voice for a minute: STOP!!! STOP GIVING THEM MATERIAL!!!

Here?s a tweet from Northwestern radio, WNUR?s Seth Bernstein:
