Former church deacon charged with embezzlement

EDMOND, Okla. ?

A former deacon at a Catholic church in Edmond has been charged with embezzling more than $100,000.

The Oklahoma County District Attorney's office filed charges against Bill Dwight Coyle, 62, on Monday, according to Edmond police. In addition to being a deacon, Coyle was a business manager at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond, according to a police report sent to KOCO-5.

The original embezzlement complaint was made to Edmond police in July, police said.

Detectives noted in a police report that Coyle had agreed to make restitution to the church for an unspecified amount before a recent audit had been completed. However, the audit revealed that the amount of embezzled funds was considerably more than what was originally thought to be missing.

Coyle is no longer employed by St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, according to the police report.
